i hate saying goodbye! January 19, 2008

Monday morning I went over to the AIFS office to work on literature. Lo and behold… no one was there, after I had gotten up early and everything. I left a message on their machine asking them to call me when they were open. Instead I walked over to MILK, the internet café by the Pantheon and used up the rest of the minutes that my mom had bought when she and my sister were here. I got a call from Jon as I was heading to French class saying that the office was now open and it would be open in the afternoon, so I decided to wait.

I got some lunch before class because I hadn’t had breakfast and I killed time studying my literature flash cards. French class was fine – we got our tests back from Friday. I did really well on the first part (the subjonctif) – 18.5/20 and a 3/3 on the text we had to re-write in “discours indirect”. I didn’t do so hot on the dictée though, 13/20. I hate how they grade it – you get one point off for every mistake you get. So even though I only made 7 small mistakes in a whole page of writing, I still only got 13. Oh well… I hope the one on Saturday is easier! After phonetics I went over the office again in as the rain started to fall. I got what I needed to done, thankfully, and headed home for my first night of MUCHO STUDYING!!!!

Tuesday morning I spent at the office not only using the internet but studying as well. I seriously hate all these tests! It’s my last ten days in Paris – I can count the number on my fingers – and all I get to do every night is sit in my room and study. Not that the weather is helping my mood either – it’s horrible windy and rainy, no chance of sun. I guess it’s good that it’s not super nice weather because then I REALLY wouldn’t want to leave. I am definitely going to have to come back during the spring or summer so I can really enjoy being outside in Paris.

I am also very mad at my French cell phone – it likes to hang out whenever it wants, including when my mom tries and calls me like she did today. It only needs to hold out for a little longer… please!!!! I just hope that I will be able to get in touch with Ladan… she was supposed to have been here yesterday and I still haven’t heard from her… hopefully I will see her by this weekend!

I left phonetics half an hour early in order to run over to my literature class. We turned in our papers and took our final. It wasn’t too bad – only two questions that I wrote easily on. It’s nice to have that class done now so I can fully and totally focus on French… woot (as Rebecca would say). I also received a lovely letter by mail from Simone today – it really brightened up my day!!!! She is so sweet and I am so glad that I will get to see her again back at Chapman!

Same old, same old today… office, French, yummy lunch from the bakery and phonetics. After class was over I took the metro to Chatelet to glimpse some of the sales. I didn’t find much, plus I hate shopping when its soooooo crowded. It’s just not fun. I made one purchase at BHV, something I had been intending on getting before I left – some N5 Chanel perfume. I know you can buy it in the states, but I just ran out of perfume and it’s so much more special to buy Chanel in Paris! I think I will do a lot more shopping next week when I have more time and it is less crowded – I am under my study abroad budget so I gotta get my spending in! I am getting sooo sick of my clothes… that’s what happens when you wear the same things for 4 months I guess. I am excited to get back to my full wardrobe in California… I’ve forgotten what clothes I even own!

Two more days until the test, plus I have a phonetics test tomorrow – wish me luck!

This morning I got up a bit early than normal so that I could go meet up with Ladan! Her class was going to D’Orsay around 9am, so I told I would come say hi since it’s literally 3 minutes away from my apartment. It was so cool and so weird seeing her! I finally get to see a friend from home in Paris! It also kind of gave me a preview of what it might be like to see everyone else when I go home in one week… nothing super climactic, nothing much changed – which is nice! I want my friends to still be my friends! But it’s hard to tell just yet because I only saw Ladan for like 15 minutes. I feel that overall, I have changed in some ways, I just don’t really know if what ways yet. I have definitely become more independent, but it’s hard to tell if my personality has drastically changed because all my friends here didn’t know me before Paris!

After a quick hello with Ladan, we decided to meet up Saturday afternoon after my exam and go out for sure on Saturday night. I went back to the apartment and did some studying before class. I stopped at the office briefly and then went to French. Interesting story: while waiting for the metro at Odeon, there was a crazy man there who literally, I’m not kidding, was having a full blown conversation with one of the vending machines. As much as should feel bad for him, I could barely stop myself from laughing out loud! Gotta love the metro crazies!

We did more review yet again – only one class left now… how weird! The phonetics test went so-so… like last time, the first repetition part was doable, but I just completely sucked at the listening part. I was purely guessing on the majority of it. But it’s over now and I have only one more phonetics class left EVER. Plus she let us out after the test today at 3pm so it was only half a class. Tomorrow is Friday and the day after that is Saturday which equals study, study, study for me!

This morning I went to the office to get some traveling home stuff taken care of. I got shuttle money from Danika, confirmed my flight with United, and scheduled a shuttle to come pick me up at 7:45am next Friday morning. It felt good accomplishing all this because now all I have to do in order to leave is pack! It was our last French class which was soooo strange. We did some more review – a practice dictée and another practice test. I really hope the test tomorrow is similar to the ones we have been doing because that would mean I could at least do relatively well. I’m still trying to stay positive and believe I can get an A, but at this point I can only hope! Phonetics was the same thing as every other day, but for the second half we got our tests back and went over them. On the verbal part I did ok – a 15/20 which is a high B – but I bombed the listening part. Butttt she said since we all didn’t do so hot she wouldn’t count it! It was the first time anything nice like that has happened in any of my French classes! But now phonetics is done FOREVER and I couldn’t be happier!

I headed directly home, in the rain of course, to get my life together and attempt one more full afternoon of studying. Walking home from my metro stop was a bit sad, being that I was my last day of class and it was my first real feeling of all things Parisian coming to an end. Little things caught my attention, like the fact that when I get off of my metro stop I get a full-on beautiful view of the Sacré-Coeur. I am going to miss that – something so beautiful and historical and wonderful that has been in my life for the past four and a half months will be gone. Instead I get to look forward to all things California… not that that’s bad, just different! I already for see my separation anxiety from Paris!

I have to get up super early tomorrow in order to be at the testing building at 8:30am so I have to use the rest of the day and night to cram… minus watching the prime on Star Academy of course!

——

Oh what a day… and its only 2pm!!!! I got up at the crack of dawn… actually it wasn’t even the crack of dawn because it was still pitch black out at 6am. I sat up in bed and went to go turn on my light and in doing so, blew out the electricity. The Papillons were not up yet of course, so I was forced to get ready and get some last minute studying in by candle light/flash light. I left them a nice little note in French about what had happened. I headed out an hour later to catch the metro. I took line 12 to line 4 where I had to get on the RER B. I got there to the testing site an hour early – I had over estimated my time. So, I had to sit in the dark, in the freezing cold for an hour waiting to be let into the building. That waiting was HELL – it’s like the calm before the storm and it seems to go on forever.

Finally we were let in at 8:30am and I had to hike up to the 5th floor to my testing room. It was a huge room with a lot of students in it. We each had our own desk and had to put all our stuff on the side of the room. I won’t go into much detail about the test because I am trying to forget about it. It was just REALLY frustrating as I expected. Even though I put in hours upon hours of studying time in this week (one of my last weeks in Paris mind you) I was still stumped on many questions and my dictée and essay were very far from perfect. On the grammar section, there was one part I completed failed – we had to re-write a paragraph into passive voice. I have never ever ever learned how to do that – not in high school and not here in Paris. It was totally unfair and I almost cried. I am definitely going to mention something to my teacher on Thursday. I really don’t know what to expect… and the results aren’t posted until February 7th, and I won’t be here!

After the test was finally over I headed back into Paris to get my haircut. I think I am going to grow it back out after getting it cut short when I got here. So I just got it trimmed and re-did my bangs. I got back to the apartment and the lights had been fixed and Madame Papillon said I wrote perfect French! Well, at least I accomplished something today in the French language! Now its time for a nap, I think, after barely 6 hours of sleep!

I had a lovely nap – I was so deep asleep for like 3 hours! Shortly after that I got dressed and met up with Ladan and her friend for dinner. I took them down to St. Michel and we had a typical French dinner – wine, bread, salad, meat and potatoes, dessert. It was so nice catching up with Ladan and hearing about her life as well as the lives and drama of all my crazy, amazing friends at Chapman. The only big thing that went wrong during the meal was that Ladan got a fish bone stuck in her throat and she couldn’t eat most of her dinner (but thankfully she got it out before dessert). We parted with Ladan’s friend after dinner and stopped back at my apartment for me to change and pick up some alcohol that I had before going over to Ladan’s hotel. She got changed super fast and then we went with some of the other people in the Chapman Paris group on the metro heading over to Hotel de Ville. One of the girls in the group has a bunch of French friends and we went with them to the Longhop. We had a good time there until it closed and then we took the last metro to the outskirts of Paris where one of the guys had a friend who owned a bar/restaurant. The bar was closed but he had opened it up for us and other people and it was a private party. It was really great chilling in there, hanging out, drinking, and getting to speak French! We didn’t head home until 4:30am – I hailed a cab and four of us shared it so it wasn’t that expensive. It was such a great night and when I got back to the apartment, I had an internet connection and I was able to AIM with Laurel and a few other people! I found out from Jake that rookie night for the baseball team is the Saturday night I get back to Chapman which is so cool because I will get to go! Today I slept until past noon and will probably go back to bed shortly! It was so nice not having to study and having fun instead!

Sunday I spent lazing around the apartment, starting to pack and getting stuff started for my oral exam Thursday. I was fully rested Monday morning and set out around 10am to go to this gallery over on Grands Boulevard that has a Robert Motherwell exhibition going on. I trekked all the way over there by bus, by metro, and by foot only to find that it was closed on Mondays. Ug – I will just have to go back Wednesday or Thursday. So, I hopped back on the metro and went shopping at Printemps and Lafayette and along Haussman Boulevard. I was pretty successful – I bought some clothes at the sales, a bag, a Christian Lacroix calendar for 3 euros and some souvenirs/presents. There were so many things that I really, really wanted but of course were so out of my budget. However, I do have quite a bit of money left so I might splurge the last day I am here… or I might save and use that money for a new phone and new laptop. Who knows.

I went to the office briefly before heading home. It was nice to see Paul, Josh, Aaron and the AIFS people one last time since we are leaving this week. I headed home to drop off my purchases and shower before going over to Ladan’s hotel. We just chilled until 7:30pm when we went and met up with some people for dinner. We ended up having dinner in Montmartre at this really great place. I got this huge salad with chicken, cheese, potatoes, tomatoes, etc. – and wine of course! We went quickly out for drinks after, but we were all pretty tired so we turned in early.

Today, Tuesday, I got up and continued preparing for my oral exam since I didn’t work on it yesterday. I met up with Ladan and another girl from Chapman, Margaret, around noon at Trocadero to take Eiffel Tower pictures and walk around the Champs de Mars. It was a BEAUTIFUL day – the sun actual came out and it was wonderful… its days like this that make me not want to leave! We got crepes for lunch and then I left them to go back home and continue studying. We want to go tonight (probably my last time) so I need to be productive! On the bus ride home I got so sad, passing by the Eiffel Tower, Concorde, Invalides, Pont Alexandre…. I will miss this place so much!

——

I spent the rest of Tuesday semi-studying… I am soooo sick of it! I also started packing which was probably a good thing because even though I have a tiny room, I have a lot of stuff! Plus I’m probably going to buy more in the next few days! After dinner and a nap I went and met up with Ladan again at her hotel. We had a drink with some other Chapman people and then four of us headed to the metro to go out (while we were drinking we found out that Heath Ledger had died – I am soooo upset… I really honestly loved him). The three of them were pretty tired and not in a huge going out mood so I was kind of worried, but I wanted to go since it was probably my last time and I was meeting Courtney at the club.

We went to a place called Duplex by the Arc de Triomphe – it was free for students before 1am on Tuesdays, plus it was buy one get one free drinks until 1am (and the drinks were so strong)! It was a really, really fun time – we danced the night away! There were two rooms – a hip hop room and a house room. The Chapman girls didn’t know any of the house songs which I have become so familiar with… I’m going to have to bring house back to Cali! We took taxis home at the end of the night and I crashed. Today I am planning on going back to that art exhibition, more shopping, more studying, and more packing. On two more full days here!!!!

——-

So today I went back over to that Robert Motherwell exhibit that I had been trying to go to.  It was cool – not as large scale as I had hoped – it was just a small gallery that had about 15 of his smaller pieces.  I really, really, really loved every single one of them, especially his black on white pieces that symbolize the sun.  They were all for sale – at least 6,000 euros each… when I’m rich…. Sigh.

I then walked over to Printemps to do some more shopping… I didn’t find much, just a bra that was on sale!  Now my Parisian wardrobe is complete!  After that I went over to Chatelet/Hotel de Ville area to shop and walk around in the nice weather.  I got a sandwich and bought some things… it was nice, but tiring.  I made a quick trip to the touristy shops on my way home, but nothing caught my eye.  I am racking my brain to make sure that I have gotten everything I wanted here in Paris before I leave!  I feel like I still need some significant memento, like a necklace or something, but I’m really not much of a jewelry wearer.  All my other purchases will have to suffice… and all my great millions of photos I have taken!  But I have one more day to wander around and make any last minute purchases… and I have to get one more nutella crepe… and go to the grocery store to get some baguette and cheese for the plane!

—-

Today I slept in, packed some more, and studied before making a quick trip to the grocery store.  I stocked up on all my favorites for the plane – some baguette and cheese, chips, prince cookies, Cadbury fingers, Haribo, and Bueno bars.  Super healthy, I know… but the sugar will help me get through what will probably be one of the most stressful three days of my life!  Around 1pm I went over to St. Michel to walk around.  I bought a Sorbonne t-shirt for myself since they finally went on sale.  I got a delicious ham and cheese crepe and went and ate it by the river, catching a glimpse of the Notre Dame and the Seine and all things Parisian for one more time.  When it was time, I went over to Raspail to take my oral exam.  It went quite well, I think, but all that matters is that it’s done and I can forget about French for now!  Not that I want to completely forget it – just in terms of school, I mean.  I walked home down St. Germain just to be outside in Paris.  I got another crepe – this time a nutella one – trying to use up my euros.  I have just enough for a small dinner tonight.  I think I am going out for a bit with Alison, Paul, and Courtney… just to be out in Paris for one last time before heading home!

This trip has been phenomenal – everything I expected and more.  Its so surreal because it is ending… my study abroad experience has come to a close.  I will never ever forget everything I saw, did, and learned and I will for sure be coming back.  Paris is my third home now along with Fort Collins and Orange and it will forever be a part of me.  I look forward to getting home safely and sharing my experiences with my friends and family.  I am so lucky as to have lived in Paris and I am going to miss it SO MUCH!  It means so much to me and has had such an impact on me like I never knew it could.  This blog has been a great way to keep track of everything I have been too… I can’t to re-read it when I get back and then many times more throughout my life.  Who knows if I will continue with it back in the states, I probably won’t have time!  I may not have been able to afford designer clothes or fancy things, but I will cherish my pictures, my memories, my new friends, my amazing experiences, and my entire life here forever with the help of this little blog.

Je t’aime, Paris… je ne t’oublierai jamais!

the beginning of the end January 7, 2008

So it’s Friday night and I haven’t blogged all week!  That’s quite a long time – it just goes to show that this week was SUPER busy!  So, I will try my best to recap everything!  Monday I skipped phonetics and instead went on the Seine boat ride that AIFS had arranged.  It was frigid cold so I ended up staying in the inside, heated part of the boat for most of the trip.  Luckily there was still great views through the glass paneled room and I got some great pictures.  The boat took us up and down the Seine past all the famous sites: the Notre Dame, Musée d’Orsay, the islands, the Eiffel Tower, etc.  It was cool to see everything from a different perspective, as well as go under all the beautiful bridges.  While we floated along we all chatted inside being as it was one of the last times we would all be together because all the quarter students leave tomorrow!  John handed out our little AIFS “yearbook” that was a compilation of all the hilarious comments we had written down at Thanksgiving dinner.  It was a great token and we all used it to exchange our American cell phone numbers.

Tuesday we got out of literature early, thank goodness, and Simone and I rushed home in order to change before we went to the Opéra to see the French Ballet perform Paquita.  The opera house was gorgeous, so stunning, I felt like I was in a dream.  Our seats were pretty high up but we could see the entire stage – all the beautiful dancers and their costumes and their perfect formations.  It was amazing – one of the best parts of my stay in Paris so far.  The ballerinas were freaking incredible.  Their technique was perfect and the choreography was flawless.  The story was lovely as well – it’s basically about a gypsy dancer who falls in love with a prince.  The ending sequence was awesome – tears were brought to my eyes!  It made me remember how much I miss dancing and ballet and pointe… I wanted to be out there on the stage dancing the pas de deux in a sparkly tutu and satin pointe shoes!  It was truly magical and something I will never forget!

After the ballet, I unfortunately had to go home and stay up half the night studying for my two finals – Franco American Relations on Wednesday morning and Fashion on Thursday afternoon.  For Franco American, I just had to organize my notes and documents since, like the midterm, it was open note.  The test went fairly well – it was a lot clearer than the midterm and I answered the questions the best I could.  I was SO glad to be done with that class!!!!  After it was finished, before French, I rewarded myself with two chocolate croissants!

The entire rest of my Wednesday was dedicated to memorizing 100 years of Parisian fashion history.  This was not an easy feat.  One of my friends Maria had to go home before the final on Thursday so she had taken it Wednesday morning – she let me know the format and told me that it was really hard.  Great.  So I studied my twenty pages of typed notes, made a review guide, AND made a billion flashcards.  It was tiring and I finally fell asleep that night, notes in hand.  The next morning I didn’t go to French or phonetics, but instead went and met up with my fashion class at the Yves Saint Laurent archives.  We paid 8 euros to get a small private tour of his archives – it was incredible.  They have all his clothes stored in these huge pressurized, air conditioned vaults and our tour guide had to wear white gloves when touching the pieces.  We got to see a bunch of things included his original Piet Mondrian dress, his homage to Van Gogh jackets, his Russian collection wedding dress, the original A-line pea coat, safari dresses, and much, much more.  It was amazing – I felt like I was in the presence of something sacred and I found myself holding my breath!  It was definitely a once in a lifetime experience and something not many people get to do – I am so lucky!  I was sad I wasn’t allowed to take pictures (for good measure), but of course I got a postcard to commemorate the experience.

For the rest of the day before my Fashion final at 3pm I crammed!  The final did turn out to be quite tricky, especially the second part… and it took me almost 3 hours to complete!  The first part was just 27 “short” answer questions (more like long answers for me) about material we had covered in class.  The second part consisted of 8 pictures of silhouettes – we had to name the trend or designer, the approximate decade it was inspired from, two characteristics about the picture that make us know it’s from that trend, and the one characteristic about the photo that makes it clear that it is a modern version of the trend.  Ug – it was so hard!  About two hours in, a good majority of the class had finished so our teacher brought out our surprise – champagne and cookies.  It was a lovely gesture, but I was really upset because I was trying to concentrate and finish my test successfully when all around me my teacher and classmates were being loud and getting drunk.  It was really disrespectful and I almost said something.  Instead I tried to tune them out and finished my test as fast as I could.  After I was done, I drank and ate!

After everyone was done we went over the test together.  I actually did pretty well – I got most of the first part right (even though I don’t know how much lee-way she is going to give us) and I only got one completely wrong on the second part (however I got certain parts of certain pictures wrong as well)… I hope it turns out ok!  She said we could email her in January for our grade.

After class I finally went home after a very long day.  I went over to Zoe’s for dinner – she made excellent pasta, chicken, and salad.  That night we met up with all the girls at Café Oz for one last hurrah – it was super fun and I had a blast!  There was hardly anyone in French class today (Friday) – most people had taken an early vacation.  Class went on like normal, however, though at the end our teacher whipped out some wine and pretzels and Christmas music – it was a nice touch… minus the fact that she gave us A TON of homework for over break!

After phonetics I went over to Zoe’s to use the internet because the office closed early.  We hung out for a bit and then I went home to shower and nap.  Simone, Zoe, Jill, Catherine, and I all met for dinner in the Saint Michel area.  We went to a great French restaurant – I got onion soup, steak, and sorbet for dessert.  Yum – French food is seriously the best thing I’ve ever had!  After dinner we walked around for a bit and went into some tourist shops for some last minute shopping for the girls (since they all leave tomorrow)!  We then had to say our goodbyes which were super sad – it’s hard saying goodbye to people that you’ve spent the last couple months with and who have shared the study abroad experience with you.  I really hope I get to see some of them again because they are a part of my life now.  Thank goodness for facebook – it will allow us to keep in touch!

It’s crazy that they are all leaving – it’s quite sad and all of a sudden I felt very lonely… I still get to be in Paris for over another month!  But I’m really alone just for one day (which will actually be quite nice).  School is over for two weeks and on Sunday I get to see my mom and my sister and go to Madrid!  It’s Christmas time!

——-

Saturday the slight loneliness continued but I kept myself busy by sleeping in, doing a month’s worth of laundry, and packing for Spain.  The next morning I finished up packing and showered before heading off to the airport.  Madame wished me a nice trip and I declined her breakfast offer…. I was too antsy to get to the airport!  I took the metro over to St. Michel in order to catch the RER B.  I had learned my lesson from going to Charles DeGaulle last time and I went to the ticket counter to buy a supplemental ticket because I would be traveling outside of Zone 2.  However, the ticket lady proceeded to tell me that, for some reason, that day all metro and RER tickets were free.  So instead I just bought three return tickets so that we wouldn’t have to wait in line to buy tickets when we came back from Madrid.

I got to the airport early without any hassles.  I stopped and got a sandwich and Orangina for lunch and proceeded to wait for mom and Rebecca.  Their flight ended up being about an hour late, so I was waiting for quite a while.  They finally got there and we checked in and went through security.  Our flight went by without any problems.  Upon landing in Madrid we hopped on the metro.  It wasn’t too tricky, but just annoying because we had to change lines twice and it was hard, especially for mom and Rebecca, hauling their big suitcases up many flights of stairs.  We finally made it to our stop and sought out our apartment.  No one was there to meet us and the only option we had was to call the number mom had from the rental people.  Luckily I had my cell phone, so we called her.  She picked up and told us she had been waiting for awhile… we had been late and she got worried so she went to an internet café to see if we had emailed her.  Anyways, she came over and let us in after we hung up.

The apartment was quite small, but cozy – it was like the attic of the building.  The only problem was the slanting ceiling because Rebecca and I had to duck in parts of the room to avoid hitting our heads.  But the beds were comfy and the kitchen was quaint – the bathroom was nice minus the fact that there was never enough hot water.  That night, Sunday, after unpacking and drinking some rum and cokes (mom had bought a huge thing of rum from duty free – awesome!) we set out in search of food.  We found a restaurant down the street a ways.  I got this amazing sandwich – bacon, chicken, tomatoes, lettuce, egg, and more.  I was sufficiently stuffed as we walked home, stopping briefly at a little grocery store to buy some cereal and milk for the next morning.

Monday morning we slept in and headed out to explore the city.  We scoped out Plaza Mayor which was right up the street from our apartment.  There were all these stalls selling wigs and masks and costume type things.  I guess on December 28th in Spain it’s their equivalent of April Fool’s Day.  Throughout our stay there we saw tons of people in crazy wigs.  I then directed my family towards the Prado museum, Spain’s equivalent to the Louvre.  After making it there we found that it was closed on Mondays… it would have to wait until another day.  Instead we walked through the botanical gardens which were right next door.  They were pretty but nothing super exciting.  Next, we tried to go to the Reina Sofia museum, the home to Picasso’s Guernica.  However, that too was closed… it seemed that most things would be closed December 24th and 25th due to the holidays.

We were hungry so we stopped at an Italian restaurant for lunch.  We shared three dishes – a Marguerita pizza, pesto pasta, and pasta Bolognese.  Yum yum yum.  After that we hopped a bus (first going in the wrong direction) to the modern part of the city.  We passed some great architecture on the way.  The modern part was interesting to look at but we really only stayed around for about 15 minutes before hopping the metro to go check out the movie theatre.  At the movie theatre, we picked out the movies we wanted to see and decided to come back for the 8pm showings in order to see our annual Christmas Eve movie.  We were all very tired so we went back to the apartment for a nap.

Around 7:15pm we headed back to the movie theatre on the metro.  Mom was not feeling very well and she actually ended up throwing up on the metro… lovely.  I felt so bad for her!  We should have gone home then, but she said she was okay.  We went the rest of the way to the movie theatre only to find that it had closed after the 6pm showings due to Christmas Eve.  Discouraged again, we walked halfway home looking at all the Christmas lights and then metro-ed home.  We snacked and played games before going to bed.

Christmas morning we slept in and opened presents.  I got the Jingle Spells CD from Rebecca plus some other small gifts (including refried beans!!!!!!! I’ve already had three bean burritos now to date).  From mom I got the traditional goodies in my “stocking”, plus she told me she had deposited money into my account…. Yeah!!!!  Mom and Rebecca both liked what I had gotten for them so I was happy!  After presents we headed out into Madrid again.  We took the metro to the North of the city and slowly walked around back in the direction of our apartment.  We went through a park, some an ancient pyramid, some cathedrals, the royal palace and gardens, and other historic sites.  We had a late lunch at this cute café.  I had coffee and split a salad and a pizza with Rebecca.  It was a perfect Spanish Christmas lunch!

We tried again to see a movie that night – this time we were successful!  Rebecca and I saw the movie Michael Clayton with George Clooney… it was really good!  Afterwards, we had to wait a bit for mom to get out of her movie so we went to Starbucks for some lovely refreshing Frappacinos!  So American of us… but they were dang good!

Wednesday we did two museums – the Reina Sofia (with Picasso’s amazing Guernica and some great modern art including some Motherwell’s!) and another modern art museum just down the street.  They had the most comprehensive modern collection I had ever seen – seriously a little bit of everything: Modrian, Picasso, deKooning, Rothko, Chagall, Matisse, Delaunay, Louis, and much more.  It was great – it was refreshing to see some amazing modern art after being immersed in so much impressionism and classical art in Paris!

For lunch we went to a Thai restaurant where I was able to order Pad Thai!  It wasn’t as good as Cha Thai’s in Orange or Sri Thai’s in Fort Collins, but it was still delightful.  In the afternoon, Rebecca and I split up from mom because she wanted to go look at another park.  Rebecca and I walked home stopping through Plaza del Sol and Plaza Mayor for some shopping.  We ended up both buying some really great scarves, the perfect Spanish souvenir.

Thursday morning mom made us get up early to get to the Prado museum.  It had been way way too crowded the day before and there was still a pretty long line on Thursday, but we toughed it out and waited.  Overall, I was not super impressed with the Prado – I think the Louvre has the same quality and scale of work, plus more.  But maybe I’m just a biased Parisian!  Anyways, I saw some interesting works by Goya and after I had had my fill, I waited in the café reading and sipping on coffee waiting for mom and Rebecca.  After we met up, we headed over to the Atocha train station in order to catch a train to Toledo.  After waiting in line forever, however, yet again, mom was told that all tickets were sold out to Toledo for the day due to it being the holidays.  We were all very disappointed, but there was really nothing we could do… next time we will know to plan better!

So instead, we had lunch in the train station, which actually turned out to be really good.  I ordered a tortilla, which in Spain is a sandwich with potatoes, egg, and green peppers.  It was soooooooo good!  I got another the next day at the airport!!!!  After lunch we headed back over to the park we had visited on Tuesday to take this thing called the Telefrico – a gondola ride that gives you great views of the city.  We took it one way and got off for a bit on the end to stroll around and soak up some sun.  After taking the return trip, I split up from mom and Rebecca to get in some quality alone time.  I walked around for a bit, shopping, but not buying anything.  I took the metro home and waited for the family to get back.  The evening was spent packing and getting ready to fly back to Paris.  Overall, a lovely visit to Madrid.

We left for the airport the next morning at 9am.  Our plane ended up being delayed for over an hour which sucked… I bought a Vogue and tried to waste time.  Landing in Paris, we took the RER to St. Michel and then took line 10 to the Ségur stop.  We waited for a while for the landlord to meet us… I guess he had been waiting at the apartment for us but since we hadn’t had internet access for the past week, we hadn’t gotten any of the information.  So he finally came and got us at the metro stop and we went to the apartment.  His entire family was there waiting for us – three little boys and his wife.  He went through the entire apartment showing mom anything and everything.  It took him a good half an hour.  Finally, the left and we were alone!

The apartment is really nice – two single beds and a double pull out couch, a nice big bathroom with a separate toilet, a TV, a nice big kitchen table, a nice kitchen, and also a washing machine!!!!  However…. NO INTERNET!!!!  I almost cried when I found out… you have no idea how much I was looking forward to having internet… what a horrible let down.  But life goes on I guess.

After we had somewhat settled in, Rebecca and I went over to my apartment to pick up some things for me (pillow, laptop, clean clothes, etc.) while mom went and explored on her own.  We decided to walk around our area to find a place for dinner that night after we met back up at the rented apartment.  We found a lovely little café, a typical French place about 10 minutes away.  We ordered a bottle of wine (most of which I ended up drinking) and I ordered onion soup and tomatoes and mozzarella.  Mom got steak and potatoes which were yummy and Rebecca got this fabulous cheesy mashed potato dish.  A wonderful first meal in Paris.

This morning (Saturday) Rebecca and I slept in.  We didn’t head out to do things until about noon after we had taken our time waking up and eating baguette, nutella, and tea.  We took the metro over to the Pompidou.  There was a line – I have never seen any lines in Paris yet… this will be interesting being here during a holiday season.  We waited the line out and finally got inside.  It was a great experience – they have a superb collection of modern art.  My favorites were the Mondrian and Rothko pieces and…… they had some Pollock’s!!!!  It was my first time seeing actually pieces by him and it was freaking amazing!

After spending a good 2.5 hours there, we stopped by some touristy gift shops as we walked through the Marais towards the Jewish quarter.  For dinner we ate falafels standing on the side of the road.  We browsed through a second hand clothes shop before splitting up… I headed back to the apartment to get my laptop and go to an internet café.  Rebecca and mom continued to explore Paris for the rest of the day.  I went to the internet café that we used for Café Abroad meetings.  I got there at 7pm hoping to get in a good two hours of internet usage, only to find that on Saturdays they closed at 8pm.  I got done as much as I could… my computer turned itself off twice which didn’t help.  I will definitely be needing to go back there again at some point.  I am behind on Café Abroad work and I had so much homework!!!!

Tomorrow we are planning on going to Notre Dame and St. Chapelle – two sites I have not been to yet.  It is tiring, being a tourist in Paris!  I am so glad I have been here for 4 months and have been able to spread out all the sight-seeing because cramming it all into a week is hard work!  I am going to have to let mom and Rebecca go out on their own one or two days so I can get some things done before going back to school!  Under a month left in Paris now… it went by so fast!  I got some great Facebook messages and posts from some friends, though, which makes me so excited to go home and see them!  But I plan on soaking in as much Paris as I can until then!

——

Sunday we got an earlier start… we were out the door by ten!  Mom went and found some fresh chocolate croissants for breakfast – amazing as usual!  I don’t know what I am going to do back in the states without pain au chocolate and French baguette!  We took the metro over to the Notre Dame… there was a line, but it moved fast because entrance is free.  There was a Sunday mass going on while we visited which was very cool.  It was SO beautiful in there – the stained glass and the architecture are extraordinary to look at.  We took our time walking around, listening to the singing and the sermon, and writing messages of peace at this little table they had.  It was a very cool experience… I can’t believe I’ve waited this long to go to the Notre Dame – I mean I do walk by it at least once a week!

After the cathedral we browsed some nearby tourist shops as we headed over to Shakespeare & Co. bookstore.  I bought some more postcards – I’ve decided that I think I want to collage all of the tons of postcards I have gotten and frame it and hang it in my room… I think it will be the perfect souvenir of my wonderful time spent in Paris.  Rebecca and mom also bought some souvenirs.  They are being so good about buying gifts for their friends!  It’s making me realize that I should probably start doing that… my current idea is to buy chocolate and scarves for everyone.  I hope they like what I bring back!  I am the first out of all of us at Chapman to study abroad so I don’t know the gif bringing back protocol!  I have to set the curve!

We quickly browsed through Shakespeare & Co.  Simone would be proud that I finally went there!  We also browsed the bouquiniste stands along the Seine as we walked towards Saint Chapelle.  We waited in line for quite a long time in order to get into Saint Chapelle.  Thankfully it was very beautiful inside – it is over 800 years old and the walls are made out of these huge stained glass windows.  It is a historical gem!  There was no heating there and we got freezing cold, so on or departure we headed straight to a café across the street for lunch.  It was a great meal – I got coffee, a croque monsieur, and had bites of mom’s quiche and Rebecca’s lasagna.  After lunch Rebecca and I split up from mom and headed over to the Ile de la Cité to get some Maison Bertillion ice cream.  Mom wanted to go to the Conciergerie, which I had already been to with AIFS.

Rebecca and I ate our ice cream as we headed over to rue Rivoli to window shop.  I got white chocolate flavor again – so freaking good.  Unfortunately, it was Sunday, so pretty much all the shops were closed.  We went into all the open ones, however, as we made our way towards Chatelet metro stop.  I bought one shirt at the last store we went into – it’s an oversized button up in a flowery print.  I really liked the store I bought it in – I think I will go back soon!  Tonight I’m not sure what the plan is – I think we might go over to Place Concorde and ride the Ferris Wheel!!!!

——-

Sunday night we did end up going to the Ferris Wheel once mom came back to the apartment.  It ended up kind of being a rip off though… I mean its 8 euro per person and we didn’t even get our own ride – we shared our module with a couple from Serbia.  Plus we went around like twice before they made us get off.  The views were still very pretty, however, and when we got off we treated ourselves to Nutella crepes.  After that, Rebecca and I went home and left mom to wander around on her own.

Monday morning we got up, had a lovely breakfast of chocolate croissants, scones, and tea, and headed to the Louvre.  I went around on my own for two hours because I already had my student pass.  I visited two sections that I hadn’t gotten to yet – the Egyptian antiquities and Napoleon III’s chambers.  Both were very interesting!  I met back up with mom and Rebecca at 1pm and we headed outside for a quick photo-op beside the glass pyramid and then over to rue Rivoli.  We stopped at some tourist shops along the road and I finally bought some souvenirs for my friends at home!  We went over to Angelina’s for lunch… we had to wait in line, but only for about 15-20 minutes.  Their world famous hot chocolate was well worth the wait!  After lunch, I walked through the Tuileries briefly in order to show mom and Rebecca where l’Orangerie was.  I then went back to the apartment by myself to possibly get some homework done before New Year’s Eve!

—–

While mom and Rebecca were at l’Orangerie checking out the beautiful Monet’s, I went back to the apartment where I updated pictures and my blog and started working on some homework.  I made a little dent, enough to make myself feel productive.  Mom and Rebecca weren’t gone for very long and when they came home around 6pm we all went to Monoprix for a little bit of shopping.  I got the rest of my friend’s presents shopping done and bought some wine to take home for myself (and share with my roomies)!  We also bought some champagne!  Back at the apartment we all took short naps.  We made dinner at home because we weren’t super hungry and snacked a bit while we drank champagne (and rum and coke as well)!

At 11pm we headed out to the metro to go over to the Eiffel Tower.  The metro was insanely packed – pretty much as bad as it had been during the strike!  Luckily we only had a couple stops until we made it to Trocadero.  I had had no idea what it was going to be like at the Tower – I had figured it would kind of be like how it had been during the Rugby World Cup games… crowded, but I thought we would be able to get down to the Champ de Mars under the Tower.  Coming out of the metro station I couldn’t believe my eyes… I don’t think I have ever seen that many people!  It was wall to wall packed bodies all the way from the Trocadero circle, through the Trocadero square, down the stairs on each side, across the bridge over the Seine, under the Tower, and all the way to the Ecole Militaire.  It was millions and millions of people!  There was no way we were going to be able to get across to the actual Eiffel Tower and it was fast approaching midnight so we climbed up onto one of the sides of the Trocadero square.  It turned out to be a really good spot – we had a perfect view of the tower and we were high above all the crowds of drunken Parisians.

The actual New Year was sort of anti-climatic.  There was no countdown but at midnight the Eiffel Tower started sparkling like it does every hour and the crowd went CRAZY!  There were no official fireworks but anyone and everyone seemed to have brought them and they were being set off left and right regardless of the millions of people standing around.  It seemed a bit dangerous to me, but luckily we avoided the line of fire and simply got to enjoy the colorful displays! We waited for about an hour on our perch letting the massive crowds disperse a little.  We watched the Tower sparkle one last time at 1am and then got down from our ledge and waited in line for some fabulously warm Nutella crepes.

Rebecca and I had planned on going out, but we ended up just walking home through the revelry, getting back about 2:30am.  I didn’t know exactly where the best place to “go out” would be – it seemed that anywhere and everywhere it was going to be insanely crowded and the metro was going to be impossibly hectic as well.  Plus, Rebecca is only 17 so I don’t know which places IDed and which didn’t.  And catching a taxi home would not be possible in the slightest.  In all honesty I was also a bit scared – there was SO many people about and it would have been very easy to get lost or hurt or harassed.  I’ve never really had that feeling in Paris, so Rebecca and I resolved to go out on Thursday or Friday night in order to guarantee a good going out experience for her!

Overall it will be a New Year’s I will never forget, simply because it was a once in a lifetime experience!  Each year I have had very interesting New Year’s experiences… I wonder what next year has in store for me.  The cool part is that it will be my first New Year’s as a 21 year old!  WOOOOO!

——-

The morning after New Year’s we slept in finally!  It’s hard because I am on my vacation and I want to relax and sleep in, but mom and Rebecca want to be up early to go see everything in Paris.  But we all slept in Tuesday which was nice.  After we finally managed to drag ourselves out of bed, we went over to my apartment so I could show mom where I live.  She said it was nice to finally see it, even though there wasn’t much to see!  We hopped on my metro stop and rode over to Cluny so I could take them up to see the Pantheon.  While they were snapping pictures, I ran over to my favorite Thai restaurant to see if it was open.  It wasn’t – a lot of things were closed that day because it was a national holiday in France.

After the Pantheon we walked down in the direction of the Luxembourg Gardens.  We got side-tracked at MILK, an internet café because Rebecca really wanted to use the internet.  We purchased some time and used the internet for a little under an hour.  I got caught up on internet things as well which was nice.  After we had each checked our email, etc. we continued walking towards the gardens only to get there just as they were closing.  It was already 5pm and we were sort of at loss as to what to since so many things were closed.  We ended up deciding to go see a movie at 6:45pm over at Montparnasse.  Mom walked there and Rebecca and I took the metro.

We bought tickets at the theatre and then had some time to kill so we went and got some food.  We met up with mom right before the movie – we saw Elizabeth, The Golden Age, one that I had been wanting to see for a while now!  It was really good – I love period pieces and I love Clive Owen!  There was also a preview for a movie called Dancing Queens, an English movie about the world of girl’s dance competitions!  It looks awesome and it comes out next week so I will definitely be going!

After the movie we just headed home to read, relax, and go to bed.  Wednesday will be another full day of Paris sightseeing, but I think I might sleep in and meet up with the family later!

——-

Wednesday morning I slept in a bit while mom and Rebecca left early for Musée Rodin.  I had wanted to go, but resolved to go another time on my own schedule since it is only two blocks from my house and AIFS will refund me anyways.  Instead, I slept in and had a nice leisurely morning only.  I met up with mom and Rebecca outside of the museum at 11am and we walked over to Invalides together.  It was cool to finally get inside… its funny because it is right down from my apartment and I have never been!  We saw Napoleon’s tomb first which is located directly under the golden dome and then saw parts of the rest of the building.  There are several different exhibits that make up the Musée de l’Armée… I visited just two – one on the French Resistance movement during WWII and another on WWI and WWII.  They were interesting… a typical museum.

After Invalides we metro-ed home together for some lunch and relaxation.  I made an excellent tomato and cheese baguette sandwich and we all snacked on cookies.  Rebecca and mom left around 4pm to go over to the Arc de Triomphe.  I sat that one out since it was freezing cold outside (and I had just been last week) and instead took a short nap, did some homework, and watched Star Academy.  After they got back to the apartment we left for dinner about 7:15pm.  I took them to my favorite Indian restaurant over in the Latin quarter for a great dinner of naan, rice, and spinach curry.  Thoroughly stuffed we headed home in order to prepare for another day tomorrow which I believe will include Musée d’Orsay, shopping, and possibly the Eiffel Tower!

——-

This morning I actually forced myself to get up early with mom and Rebecca because I wanted to go to Musée d’Orsay with them.  Rebecca and I stayed there for a little over an hour – I went and saw the things that I hadn’t seen the first time I went since that time I had spent over two hours just on the fifth floor with all the Impressionist pieces.  This time, I started at the Hodler exhibit which was still going on.  I had ran through it before but I wanted to go look at his pieces with a fresh, rested eye.  It was a very good exhibit – I love his landscapes.

I then explored the ground floor… all the pre-Impressionist pieces including some of my favorites by Tissot and Manet.  I had about 15 minutes left after this so I ran quickly up to the fifth floor to get another glimpse (because it will probably be my last L) of my beloved Degas’.  They were no less phenomenal the second time around, both his paintings and his pastels.  After a quick browse through the gift shop (I got a Degas inspired pad of paper for my purse), Rebecca and I left mom at the museum – she had only just gotten through the ground floor!  We took the metro over to Concorde to go get some tea at Laduree.

I hadn’t yet been to Laduree and I was so glad we went!  It was a cute little tea room and we got a table for two by the window.  I ordered vanilla tea and Rebecca got a fruity flavored kind.  We split a chocolate éclair and a citron tart.  It was sooooo good!  I felt very posh and I thoroughly enjoyed my sweet tea and our little treats!  After we had paid, I quickly showed Rebecca rue Saint Honoré with all the designer boutiques… Chanel, Prada, Gucci, Hérmes, Lanvin, etc.  We then hopped the metro to Chatelet to go do some shopping in an area we could actually afford!  We walked all the way from Chatelet almost to Saint Paul and back doing shopping… Rebecca made some great purchases as did I.  She got a trench coat from H & M, rain boots from Texto, and a leather bag from the 2nd hand store.  I also got a leather bag (only 5 euros!), some new black boots (since mine are literally falling to pieces), and a brown belt from Texto.  It was quite a successful shopping trip!

On the way back to the apartment, we stopped at Franprix for some groceries… yogurt, tomatoes, and some yummy Brie and Camambert cheese!  The food made for a lovely late lunch!

——

Mom got home a bit later and she and Rebecca left to go climb the Eiffel Tower.  I sat it out since I had already done that hike and wasn’t super interested in freezing to death.  Plus I don’t think you can beat the magic of the first time!  Instead I stayed at the apartment, did some homework, watched TV, and painted my nails.  Some good old fashioned relaxation – one of my favorite activities!

Rebecca and mom got home about 8:30pm and a bit later we left to go get dinner in the St. Michel area.  I took them to a creperie and we got crepes and cider – ham and cheese AND a chocolate one for dessert… so good!  I’ve been perpetually full ever since mom and Rebecca got here – I have decided to go on a diet once they leave so I don’t look the least bit chubby on my return to the states.  We went home after dinner since it was already pretty late… I had talked to Courtney earlier that day – she had just gotten back from home – and we decided to go out on Friday night instead of Thursday.

Friday morning we got to sleep in a bit because we had to wait for Julie to get in from the airport.  We had a nice leisurely morning eating and reading.  Once Julie got to the apartment, we chatted together over some tea for a bit and opened the presents she had brought.  I got a beautiful necklace and some Cadbury chocolate.  We headed out to Montmartre shortly after to go see the Sacré Coeur.  Since it was my third time in Montmartre, I decided to finally ride the Funiculaire, a little gondola type ride that takes you up to the Basilica.  It was fun and I avoided some stairs!!!! We went into the church and then climbed up the millions of stairs to the dome.  The views were as spectacular as the first time I had gone, although it was a lot windier!

After climbing down from the dome, we walked over to Place du Tertre.  I really wanted to get my portrait done but it was 40 euro!  Not exactly in my budget.  Instead, we just looked at the beautiful art and got pestered by the artists.  We popped into some tourists shops and then decided to get some lunch.  We went into one of the restaurants in the square and all got onion soup and coffee.  The French onion soup was very good, of course!  It was nice to be nice and warm inside!  After our small lunch we walked down to the main street of Montmartre to see the Moulin Rouge and all the sex shops before hopping the metro home.  Mom and Julie got off at Concorde to go to the Tuileries and the l’Orangerie before they closed… Rebecca and I went the rest of the way home, stopping off at the grocery store quickly for some ice cream.  Tonight we are planning to go out…. Finally!

Two more full days of “vacation” before I have to go back to school… this was the shortest and busiest winter break I’ve had in a long time.  I freak out whenever I think that my next break isn’t until Spring Break!  But it is exciting to think that I will be heading home to Chapman in just three short weeks!  My Paris experience will be over so soon… and oh how amazing it has been!

——

Julie and mom came home and we just hung out for a bit.  They decided to go out to eat but Rebecca and I weren’t that hungry so we just stayed in, ate baguette and cheese and watched the Star Academy prime (Jeremy didn’t go home – woot)!!!!  We got ready to go and did a little drinking around 10:30pm and headed out half an hour later after mom and Julie got home.  We were planning on going to Café Oz (the one that I normally go to) but Courtney called me right as we were leaving, telling us to go to the other Café Oz (I guess there is two) over on Grand Boulevards.  I figured why not so Rebecca and I metro-ed over… we had to switch twice which sucked.  We got to the exit where Courtney had said she would be waiting for us and she wasn’t there.  It was starting to rain and she wasn’t picking up her phone.  Finally we connected and she told me she was at the other Café Oz, the one that I was originally going to go to!!!!  It was a sucky miscommunication I guess… she felt really bad.

So Rebecca and I had to get back on the metro and switch twice more to go over to Chatelet.  We finally got there and then ended up having to wait over a half an hour just to get in!  And it was raining!  Grrrrrrrrr.  Finally we pushed our way in and checked our coats.  They changed it so now Friday’s are Ladies Nights which is cool because we got in for free!  We went straight to the bar and found Courtney.  She felt really bad for making us roam all over Paris so she bought us each a drink and a shot!  What a sweetheart!  The rest of time there was really fun – it was so great going out with my sister (even though technically it was illegal for her to be there because she’s not 18 yet J)!

The night went great until we were in a taxi home and I realized that my money pouch has been stolen YET AGAIN… A SECOND TIME!!!!  I was soooo pissed and the night ended in tears over my losing 40 euros and my handmade money pouch.  I’ve lost almost 100 euros now and I’m sick and tired… I can’t afford to be just losing money!  It better not happen again in the next three weeks.  Three weeks – that’s so soon!

This morning Rebecca and I dragged ourselves out of bed and she helped me take my suitcases over to my apartment where we met up with mom.  They went off to Versailles and I stayed in Paris to pack up the extra suitcase mom is taking home for me and to nap, shower, read, relax, etc.  I’m sad that mom and Rebecca are leaving tomorrow and that I had to go back to classes on Monday!  It’s going to be study study study from now until forever!  Except that I am going to Amsterdam next weekend!  I’m so glad my family came out for Christmas (besides dad)… we had some rough spots but it was a great time overall!

——-

When Rebecca and mom got back from Versailles they were very tired so we spent the majority of the evening hanging out at the apartment together reading and relaxing.  Mom went out after a bit and brought back falafels for us!  They were marvelous as usual.  We played a game together over tea and cookies before heading to bed.  The next morning we all got up about 8am in order to be out the door to the airport at 9am.  Everything went very smoothly, although I have a hunch that my extra suitcase was over 50 pounds because mom kept stuffing things into it!  We had one last chocolate croissant together and then I left them at the RER B to head to Charles deGaulle.  I got really sad as they were leaving and when I got back to my apartment it really hit me that I was alone!  I only have about 18 days left in Paris and I really hope they go well… and they will probably go by fast!

For the rest of the day I cleaned my room, finished my French homework, read, napped, and watched a movie.  My computer is still turning off on me which really worries me.  It gets SO hot on the bottom, like its literally burning.  I really need to get it fixed the moment I get back to Orange so I don’t have to limit my computer usage to 2 hour intervals!  I also can’t wait to get back to the internet… I have a feeling that I am going to be at the AIFS office every morning and every afternoon this week!!!!

——

Monday morning was day one of going to the AIFS office in the morning.  I used the computer, using the internet to upload pictures, my blog, internship stuff, check facebook, and do some research.  I also had a bunch of stuff to take care of with Danika.  As always, my interaction with her sucked – it turns out that I only get 8 meal vouchers (instead of 12) to last me for my last three weeks.  Great… I guess my diet starts now!  Also, the newsletter had said that there would be old French tests for us to look at and study to help us prepare for our final in two weeks.  I asked about them and lo and behold she looked at me like I was crazy.  She went to ask John about it and it turns out that they might, maybe, possibly will be able to get some for me.  Thanks guys.  Seriously, AIFS cannot get its shit together!  Excuse my language…

French class went fine, minus the fact that I almost burst into tears I am getting so stressed… I seriously don’t know how I am supposed to pass this final!  I think I am going to try asking Katie again if I can take it pass/fail.  The likelihood is that the answer is no, but I’m on the verge of a breakdown.  I just keep trying to tell myself that everything will be ok – in the long run this semester won’t matter to my GPA… after French I went back to the office to do a bit more research for my Literature paper.  A bunch of the other students there and it was fun catching up and hanging out.

I went home and stopped at Franprix on the way to pick up a few odds and ends.  For the rest of the afternoon I worked on my essay and got a good chunk of it done – almost 6 pages!  Only two more to go – go me!!!!

Tuesday morning I went to the office again to do the same things as Monday pretty much.  It was really good to hear from some of my friends back home – I am getting so excited to come home, even though it will be so bittersweet leaving Paris!  It’s weird that I barely have 2.5 weeks left!  It’s also exciting that I am going to Amsterdam on Friday – I got in touch with Josephine and it looks like she has some awesome stuff planned for us.  Plussssss Ladan is coming in a week which will be so awesome, minus the fact that she comes right before my huge final.  But I will make it work, I don’t care!  French went by as usual again – just more notes and more review… pretty soon I am going to have to start cracking down on making review flashcards!

After lunch at and more internet usage at the office, I went to literature class where we took lots of notes.  It was our last class which means next week we have our final and our paper is due.  I am confident that I will do okay (at least more so than with French)!  I was supposed to meet up with a friend tonight for drinks, but I cancelled because I really want to finish my essay and start studying…

——

Wednesday morning it was back to the office for day three of catching up on internet… I accomplished a lot in an hour and a half!  I found out where Ladan is staying… actually on my same metro line about 6-7 stops away!  I’m so excited to see her!  Bad news is that I’m not going to see June when I get back because she leaves 2 days before I get back.  Talk about shitty timing!  In other news, Dani is in Scotland and I’m hoping she might be able to visit, because I don’t have anytime to make a trip up there before I leave.  And if she doesn’t, that’s another person I can add to my list of people who I don’t get to see for a year!  French class was fine – more review and more stressing.  I’m trying to adjust to the fact that it will be near impossible for me to get an A – to do that I would have to complete my text with perfection and I know I am not at that level… its just impossible.  I had a quick chat with my mom after class who tried to reassure me to not stress anymore.  I know in the long run its just a couple credits and that not everyone gets straight As in college, but I really thought I could do it!  I really wanted to graduate with Honors!  I guess this kind of screwed me over and I will just have to work extra extra hard for the rest of the time at Chapman.  I know myself and I know I am a good student and I guess that’s what really matters.  To bad that doesn’t show up on paper!  I emailed Katie at Chapman one more time – one more effort to see if I could take French pass/fail.  I doubt it, but it was worth a try!

After talking with my mom, I was hoping to go do a little shopping before heading over to the office, but I didn’t have time.  The “soldes” (sales in French) started today in pretty much every single store in Paris and it was torture watching every person on the metro have shopping bags except me!  I have resolved to go tomorrow morning for a little peek – I am trying to save all my shopping until my last week when I don’t have class.  I went to the office because they had arranged for a little post-Christmas celebration with a tradition French galette.  There is a ceramic object in one of the pieces of cake and whoever gets that piece gets to be the king or queen for the day.  Since I was the youngest person there I had to decide who got which piece of cake… Paul got the king piece!  We had champagne as well and talked and hung out for the afternoon – it was quite enjoyable!  I left around 4:30pm to get back and do my homework.  I’m hoping to take a break tonight to go see the new Keira Knightly movie!

——

I ended up going to see that movie with Paul last night – Atonement.  It was soooooooo sad!  But wonderfully done – beautiful costumes, music, cinematography, great acting… and of course James McAvoy who is utterly gorgeous!  Paul and I were both crying – I guess it was a good cathartic release (even though I have been doing enough crying lately out of stress).  I went home and went to sleep after that.

This morning, Thursday, I got up to go browse some of the sales around 10am. I went to Le Bon Marché first because I had never been there.  Turns out there’s a good reason why I’ve never been there – it wasn’t exactly in my price range.  It was like Galeries Lafayette – all amazing name brand items that even on sale, we still hundreds and hundreds of euros.  I left quickly so I wouldn’t spend my entire life savings on one purse.  I really want a cute, smaller, going out type purse – I think I will try BHV next to see if they have something more affordable!

I went down to rue Rennes for a bit after that, checking out my usual stores.  I wasn’t super successful, but it’s always good when I don’t spend money – it means that I will have more money on my return to the US where I can go shopping for less.  And plus it turns out that I might have to buy a new laptop, so I need all the money I can get.  I’m stressing hard about a new laptop – not only do I not really have the money, I also can’t afford to spend the time when I get back researching them… I need my laptop for school which is basically the day I get back!  Ugggggggggggg.  So much for an easy transition back to America.

French class was hell!  She went over what our oral exam is going to be on.  It’s on January 24th, the day before I leave which means I will have to be studying French up until my departure.  We have to be able to explain and talk about in-depth 7 different pieces of text that we covered during the semester… and we won’t know which one it is until we get there.  Then, she proceeded to give us two more practice tests to do, 3 sets of grammar homework problems, and oh wait… a test tomorrow (which she never told us about, despite her insistence… trust me I would have written it down)!  That class seriously frustrates me sometimes.  Plus, Katie emailed me back with no help regarding grades.  I am going to try and get Danika to send a note along with my transcripts regarding the issue.

After French I rushed over the office to use the internet and tried unsuccessfully to have a phone conversation with my dad.  My French phone is slowly dieing on me – I just need it to work for two more weeks!!!!  It’s tough… I think it will make it!  I got some bad news from Kaely – she wasn’t able to sign me into any dance classes.  So I have to go on the first day and pray that there is still room left!  If I can’t take at least one dance class I will be severely depressed.  I’ll end up having to take at Leann’s studio, which means I would have to pay, which is not really a possibility for me right now.  I’m hoping she’ll let me in because I’ll probably just be auditing and she knows me.  Fingers crossed.  Now I’m off to spend the rest of the day, and probably part of the night cramming French into my brain – what fun!

——-

Friday morning, guess what I did?  Went to the AIFS office of course… my new second home.  I really like going in the mornings because no one is ever there and I can peacefully use the internet and get homework done.  I checked email, facebook, etc., updated my blog, and quickly looked into new laptops – its amazing the advancements they have made in just three years!  For the price I paid for my current laptop I get a much cooler, much better one.  It’s still looking to be about $1000, though, because I’m definitely buying the 3-year extended warranty this time!!!!  I also had a quick chat with Danika at the office about grades (what else).  She is going to be sending a note to Chapman with my transcript about the grade discrepancy, etc.  I got a reply email from Katie about grades and she mentioned that students had had this problem in the past.  Thanks for warning me…. Uggggg!

French class was better than Thursday, besides the test.  However, I felt pretty confident about it so I’m keeping my fingers crossed!  I hurried home in the rain (after getting a baguette sandwich of course – ham and cheese) so get back to the apartment and pack for Amsterdam!  I’m excited even though I should be spending this entire weekend studying.  But I have 8 hours in the train (4 each way) to get things done, so that should help!

——-

So I just got back from my weekend in Holland at about 11:30pm.  It was a lot of traveling, mostly in the train, but it was a great weekend!  I got to the train fine on Friday evening at Gare du Nord and settled into my seat.  I had my row to myself, so that was really nice.  The majority of the 4 hour train ride I spent making flashcards for my literature final on Tuesday.  I took breaks every now and then to read my book and snack.  The time flew, and before I knew it we were in Amsterdam!  It was a shame that the train was during the night, however, because we went through all of Belgium and I couldn’t see anything!

I was sort of nervous getting off the train in Amsterdam because I didn’t know if I would be able to find Josephine.  However, I literally walked off the train and she was standing right there waiting for me!  We hugged and quickly got onto the train right on the other side of the platform that was heading to Leiden where her parent’s house is.  That train took about another half hour and we spent most of that time just chatting and catching up.  It was really good to see her!  Her parents met us at the train station and drove us home to their house.  I didn’t really remember much, since I hadn’t been there in over ten years, but they really do have a beautiful house in a wonderful area.  They brought out wine and cheese and crackers and we had a nice snack and chatted before all heading to bed.  I slept in Pauline’s room and had a lovely sleep.  Also, I was so excited to see that they had a cat!  She was very, very friendly and I played with her all weekend!

We got up at around 9am the next morning, got dressed, and had a lovely breakfast of tea and toast.  I got to have Dutch peanut butter and my favorite Dutch chocolate sprinkles!  Then, Antoinette, Josephine and I drove back to the train station to catch the train into Amsterdam.  We got there around noon and it was horrible weather!  Cold, windy, and rainy… however, we braved the conditions and set out to see Anne Frank’s house.  Amsterdam was amazing!  I’d never pictured it as such a beautiful city!  I loved all the wonderful canals, the beautiful houses, and all the different kinds of bikes.  We got a little lost trying to find Anne Frank’s house because the map that we had gotten at the train station was wrong – so we made a short stop at a little bakery and got sandwiches for lunch.  We finally found the house, but there was a line.  While Antoinette waited in line, Josephine took me to this store across the street called Kitsch Kitchen.  It was such a cool store!  My sister would have loved it – it had all sorts of quirky stuff and also really cool things for the kitchen and these awesome hand made bags.  I got a blue polka dot pencil case that I love.

We went back to see where Antoinette was in the line and we had perfect timing – she was just two people behind the ticket desk!  We got tickets and took the tour of the house.  I’m so glad I got the chance to go there – it was a very touching experience and it opened my eyes to the reality of Anne’s life.  I would recommend anyone to go there if you are ever in Amsterdam.  To imagine living inside such a small space for over two years is mind boggling.  It is so horrible that despite all their efforts to survive, ¾ of the Frank’s died in the concentration camps.

After the house, we walked some more about Amsterdam.  By then the sun had come out a little bit and it was much nicer!  They showed me around all these cute little side streets filled with shops and cafes along the canals.  It was wonderful!  We stopped into a little shop for tea and cake which was also wonderful – a nice chance to rest and warm up!  For the rest of the day, we walked some more around the city – we went to an outdoor flea market (I bought some gloves), went down into the Chinese district, and also glimpsed the red-light district.  After all this walking we were all pretty tired and caught a train back to Leiden about 5:30pm.  At the train station they made me try this Dutch type of food (I forget the name already) – it’s like a fried batter outside with meat on the inside.  It was different, but actually pretty good!

When we finally got back to the warmth of their house, we made dinner – Pad Thai!  We all helped and it turned out pretty good… not as good as Cha Thai or Toys Thai of course!  We had pudding for dessert as well.  After dinner, Josephine and I bicycled over to the movie rental store to grab a movie.  We got this kind of independent film called Me and Everyone We Know.  It was verrrrrry strange and I still can’t decide if I liked it or not.  Definitely not what I typically watch!  While we watched we snacked on these yummy Dutch marshmallow candy things and my favorite Dutch cookies, Stroopwafles.  I was able to use their internet before going to bed which was very nice of them!

The next morning we woke up at about the same time for another lovely breakfast.  It wasn’t raining as of yet, so Josephine and I bundled up and took a bike ride to the beach.  It was a bit challenging for me as I haven’t ridden a bike since probably last May, but I survived the ride, hills and all (even though I was a bit sweaty by the end and my thighs burned)!  We got to the beach and even though it was overcast and gray, it was still beautiful and so great to see the ocean… I’ve missed it!  We had a nice stroll along the beach talking and enjoying the sea.

After we rode back to the house, we packed up, had a quick lunch, and Josephine’s parents drove us to the train station.  We took the train to the city where Josephine lives and stored our bags in a locker before setting out into the city.  It was kind of disappointing because it was Sunday and all the shops were closed, but she gave me a great walking tour of her city – the sights, where she has classes, etc.  It was similar to Amsterdam with the lovely canals and amazing houses, just on a smaller scale.  It had more of a village-like feel with all the cobblestone streets and the boats lining the canals.  We had tea and coffee at a little café and played board games as well.  We then had a meal (it wasn’t lunch or dinner, kind of in between) at a pancake restaurant right on the canal!  You had to walk down these stairs into the canal to get inside.  I got a pancake with apples in it – it was phenomenal!  It reminded me of the apple pancake my mom normally makes at Christmas… so good.  Josephine also ordered poffergies which are these miniature dough pancakes that we shared.  They are covered in powdered sugar and also extremely yummy!

After a bit more strolling, we headed back to the train station to pick up our bags.  Josephine helped me buy a train ticket and we said our goodbyes before I boarded the train back to Amsterdam.  I was very grateful for her spending time with me during the weekend and being so hospitable!  I’m glad I came!  Anyways, I took the train to Amsterdam and bought some snacks before the train back to Paris arrived.  It was another 4 hours back, and I finished my flashcards, read, ate, and napped.  I didn’t get any French studying in or even that much Literature studying in, which I feel very guilty and unhappy about.  But over the weekend I realized that I only have barely 12 days left in Paris and I will not spend my last days here studying the entire time!  I love it here, in Paris and in Europe, and it’s going to be harder than I thought to leave.  I’ve grown accustomed to the incredibly wonderful lifestyle I lead here and the surroundings that I am so lucky to be in!  Anywho… it was an awesome weekend and I’m glad I got one more trip in before I head back to the states!

the continuing parisian tale… December 17, 2007

This morning I bundled up and went to the AIFS office.  My retarded-self had forgotten that the last newsletter had said that the office would be closed on Monday morning.  I was so pissed (because I didn’t realize this until I got there), but luckily, as I was about to leave, Danika came walking up the stairs.  It was true the office was “closed” but she had come into work anyways and she said I could use the computer while she was there… yesssss!  I checked my email, uploaded pictures and café abroad stuff, faxed a transcript request to Chapman, and got depressed looking at facebook missing all my amazing friends.  As much as I don’t want to leave Paris, I miss them all so much and I want to get back and see them all!  I saw that the girls at the Robinhood house are having a good-bye party on Saturday which made me even sadder…. All five of those girls won’t be there when I get back which means going a whole YEAR without seeing them!  This is such a weird point in my life coming and going, coming and going… I guess it is a true test to friendships and if they can survive.  I have a feeling they will!

French class was lovely – nothing too hard or crazy and not a lot of homework… although I should be studying every night getting ready for my exam in January.  It’s weird also that I have two finals next week – what a short semester!  And I have two essays I should be working on… it’s so hard to be motivated to do homework in Paris!  After class I grabbed a bite to eat – a warm ham and cheese croissant which was undeniably marvelous!  I scurried home in the freezing cold rain (by the way – the forecast said there is a possibility for snow at the end of the week!) and dropped off my school things before heading back out to the Conciergerie on Ile de la Cité.  John was a bit late coming to meet us – and there were only three of us, myself, Aylnn, and Joshua.  Simone was supposed to have come but she thought it was at 2:30pm instead of at 3:15pm… oppps.  Anyways, the three of us got a nice private tour with John through the Conciergerie, one of the oldest buildings in Paris.  It was first built as a royal castle which then turned into a revolutionary prison/tribunal for all those to be guillotined.  Nowadays, it is a museum in parts and a modern-day jail as well for French criminals awaiting trial.  It was really cool… the history was fascinating.  I got to see the cell where Marie Antoinette was held before getting her head chopped off and I got to touch a real guillotine blade (it was a very creepy experience – the blade was soooo blunt, thus the fact that typically a head was only completely chopped off after 2- 3 tries)!  We had a nice chat with John after the tour.  Aylnn and I were maybe going to go get coffee, but we decided to wait and instead I went home.

I hadn’t been feeling well all day – my body is achy and I’m tired, probably I’m a little sick due to the cold… who knows.  So for the rest of the day I just watched TV and did homework.  I am planning on going to bed early so I hopefully feel better for another exciting day of school tomorrow!  Only twelve more days until my mom and sister come!  Which means Simone and Zoe and all the quarter students leave in eleven days… that’s so soon.  I can’t even imagine leaving that soon!

——

Tuesday morning I went over to Monoprix before class to pick up a few random things… some nail polish, some paper for school, a hair clip, and of course I would up getting some food too!  French food is just so amazing, I can barely handle it!  I miss the food I eat at home, but being here has truly enlightened me.  This week, my new favorite thing are the ham and cheese croissants I get at the place I go for lunch by Raspail.  For 1.50 euro they are affordable and to die for!  Anyways, class went by alright… we got assigned a test for the next day.  After class I went to the office with my lunch and ate and used the internet before Literature class.  My mom called me during that time.  It was nice to talk with her, even if it was a very emotional talk.  But somehow she always makes me feel better!  Literature class got out early which was nice… I went home right away because it was so freezing cold and raining.  Simone and I talked about going out to dinner but it was too cold and I had a lot of studying to do.  Instead, I made my favorite for dinner – beans on toast, and watched Star Academy!

Wednesday I had to get up early for class…. It was still dark and soooo hard to get out of bed!  Simone and I got to class fine… there had been talk of another strike, but thankfully the metro was working just fine.  It was our last Franco-American Relations class!  Wooooooo!  It went alright, just more notes and some more presentations.  I went to find out my grade (pre-Final) from her after class… I got perfect scores on both participation and presentations and she told me I was the best student in the class!  That definitely put me in a good mood – that’s one grade I don’t have to worry too much about!

My French test was hard, however, and we got assigned a butt ton of homework.  I had wanted to go see a movie that night but it seemed there would be no chance of that.  I went home after grabbing some lunch and stopping by the post office for some stamps.  I literally spent the rest of the day doing homework – organizing all my Franco-American notes for the final, French grammar homework, a redaction, and another essay.  Whew… sometimes I hate being a student!  I was already in bed when I got a text from Jill asking me to come out.  I gotta save up energy and money for this weekend!  Tomorrow we are going to the Christian Lacroix exhibit in fashion which will be wayyyyy cool….

——-

Thursday morning was pretty uneventful… I went to the office in the morning and managed to stay awake through French class.  After class I met up with Kiki and Maria, got a fabulous brie and ham baguette sandwich and hopped onto the metro.  We got to Palais Royale, which was our meeting place for fashion, a bit early so we walked around rue Rivoli trying to stay warm.  It was so freezing cold!!!! And stupid me was wearing boots and lace tights.  Not too smart!  Finally, it was 3pm and we met up with our teacher and the rest of the class.  For an hour we went and walked around the outside of the Palais Royale gardens which is lined with original, very legit vintage stores.  We are talking things like Chanel little black dresses from the 40s, original Balenciaga gear, and vast assortments of everything from bags to shoes to jewelry to fur coats.  It was interesting to look at, but in all honesty kind of worthless because I was freezing cold and it’s not like I was going to be able to buy any of the amazing things I was seeing.  It was pure cruelty to make us walk past the Marc Jacobs boutique.  I almost cried.

Once we were all completely numb we headed over to the Louvre to the Textiles Museum that is currently home to the Christian Lacroix exhibit.  We were early so we browed the book store awaiting our tour guide.  Our tour guide turned out to be super cool – a chic young lady who was extremely knowledgeable about fashion and who made our tour very enjoyable.  The exhibit was HUGE!  Over three gigantic floors filled with Lacroix originals and highlighted with thousands of pieces that Lacroix himself picked out of the museum archives.  The garments were arranged by colors and patterns – black, white, colors, polka dots, etc.  It was amazing – I am definitely a converted Lacroix worshiper.  He masterfully uses the inspiration of the past to create new, innovative, colorful, and gorgeous fashions.  Truly genius.  Besides loving all of his pieces, I also fell in love with a Poiret dress from the 20s.  It was black with beaded embroidery – blue, green, silver, and grey beading, thick straps, low neck line, and falling just above the knee.  After the tour was over, most of the class left but I stayed for a bit longer.  I went and watched the footage of some Lacroix fashion shows.  It was magical to see his creations moving on an actual person.  I could have gazed at all those dresses for hours, but I finally got tired enough to go home.  It was a fantastic museum visit – one of my favorites in Paris!

Friday I stopped by the office before class again – there was a lot of people there and it was nice to hang out.  It’s so weird that so many of them are leaving in a week for good!  We got our tests back in French – I got 31/40… almost an A by American standards.  I’m trying not to worry so much about grades anymore and just enjoy my time here.  So far, so good!  After class I rushed home, dropped off my school stuff, and got on the metro to Montmartre.  It ended up only being Jill, Brad, and I who walked around Montmartre for about 1.5 hours with John in the freezing cold.  I was smarter this time – I had on tights, jeans, boots, hat, scarf, and my heavy coat!  Montmartre is one of my favorite areas in Paris and it was cool to get another look at it.  We visited Van Gogh’s old apartment, a beautiful park, the biggest house in Montmartre, the only Parisian vineyard, Place du Tertre (where all the artists are) and of course the Sacré-Coeur.  I learned a lot and despite the cold, it was a lovely and beautiful walk.  Jill and I had planned on shopping after but it was already getting dark and we were tired and cold.  So instead, we went home to nap and shower and warm up.

We met over at Zoe’s around 9pm to go out to dinner.  We found a Greek restaurant on rue Mouffetard that was fabulous.  I got a Greek salad, this pasta/meat dish, and baklava.  I was stuffed by the end!  We went back to Zoe’s and drank a little bit before heading out to Showcase.  Showcase is a club under the Alexander Bridge, right by Invalides (which is near my apartment).  It’s pretty new and its really cool… it’s under a bridge right on the Seine!  The only downside was that it was suuuuper expensive.  Ten euro to get in (not including a drink), then you had to pay to check your coat, and drinks were about ten euro a piece.  The atmosphere was really cool though.  For the first part of the night, there was a concert going on.  They were called The Dragonettes and they are from Canada.  They were pretty good… it was nice to have live music!  For the rest of the night a DJ mixed techno, which the French seem to love.  I’m a fan too, but ya gotta mix it up every now and then!  We spent the night dancing and not really meeting people… but having fun none the less.  One of the best parts was they had foosball tables!  It was one euro but that got you like 10 balls… plus we figured out how to get balls without even paying.  We played a couple games and it was great fun!  We left around 3:30am and I walked home.

Saturday we went ice-skating!!!!  It was so freaking fun.  Simone and I met up with Paul, Brad, Josh, and Zach around 2pm at Hotel de Ville.  The rink is free, but skates cost five euro to rent.  I was kind of pissed because they gave me a size too big and they wouldn’t let me trade them out.  So it made skating a bit hard, but not any less fun.  We skated for about 2 hours… it was fun!  It’s been a while since I’ve been skating and I forgot how much I enjoyed it.  It was a beautiful day – the sun was out and it was brisk but not super cold.  They played music and we skated around in circles having a blast.  After we had had our fill of skating Simone and I walked down the street to get some Ben and Jerry’s ice cream.  I got cookie dough and it was amazing!

I stopped by Zoe’s on the way home to pick up some stuff and she let me use her internet for a bit.  Before going back to the apartment I stopped by the grocery store to pick up a few things… I had been trying to hold out until next week but I literally had one piece of bread to my name and I had to have something to eat for dinner!  We had been planning on going out that night but for some reason I was super tired.  I went to sleep at 8:30pm intending on napping and the next thing I knew it was the next morning!  It worked out well though because I was able to get up early and go enjoy the day before doing homework.  It was another lovely day – cold but sunny.  I went and checked out a flea market by the Bastille before heading back over to Hotel de Ville to do some shopping.  I put a serious dent in my bank account… oppps.  I’m calling it my Christmas present to myself – a pair of boots and a beautiful dress.  I had been avoiding buying nice boots but I finally cracked and bought some because I am sick of cold wet feet!  These ones were on sale (however they were still expensive) but they are dark brown leather and should succeed in keeping me warm for the next 5 weeks.

After shopping I went to the Marais and got a falafel in the Jewish district for 5 euro.  It was sooooo good!  I am going back there for sure.  The rest of the day I am dedicating to homework and studying… one more week of school!!!!

its beginning to look a lot like christmas… November 30, 2007

Monday morning I headed out by bus to the AIFS office to get in some quality computer/printer time. I had a lot to do and I lot to print but I got it all done by the time the hoards of students were getting into the office to use the computers. I checked on my registration and thankfully none of my classes were filled…. Yet! French class was fine… we ran out of time for our verb test which was a nice surprise, but alas we would just have it the next day. After class, I went down to St. Michel to do some present shopping for my family and of course ended up spending way to much money (and it wasn’t even spent on myself)! At home, I did homework and napped before eating a quick dinner and heading over to Zoe’s apartment with my laptop and PJs in tow.

At Zoe’s I made full use of the Internet while lounging. I caught up on three episodes of the Hills and tried to download some Grey’s Anatomy (I only got one episode – but, hey, that’s better than nothing). That evening I got a text message from Simone saying that they had been stranded in Italy! I guess their flight had been cancelled and hadn’t been rescheduled until Wednesday night! How horrible! She ended up having to pay over 100 euros for a train that took over 10 hours to get back to Paris (she got home at midnight on Tuesday). Anyways, Zoe and I went to bed around 11pm, me on the couch curled up in a blanket. Web Advisor had not been working so hot before I went to bed – it kept kicking me off or timing out. So I was not too confident about registration would go… My alarm went off at 3:30am and I logged back onto my computer. The first thing I saw was an email from Katie Roller saying that they have currently gotten word of students having many problems with Web Advisor and registration. But, not to worry… just be patient. Great.

However to my great and unexpected surprise, registration went quite smoothly… so smoothly in fact, it was probably the easiest registration process I have gone through since my debut at Chapman! Of course, it still would not let me register for dance classes (because I am not a major), however that was to be expected. As long as Leann and Larry sign me in, I’m set. So instead I registered for 18 credits just in case (4 Communications classes and 2 Honors classes), so when I get back to Chapman I can pick and choose which ones I like best (for example, COM 314 hasn’t been assigned a professor yet… if I walk into that class and Sparks is standing there, I will walk right out). I will probably end up just taking 4 out of the 6 classes I registered for because if my credits from Paris transfer correctly I will only have 30 more credits left to take and 3 semesters to complete them in… which is a breeze. So instead of loading up on academics, I will spread them out, take dance classes every semester, and have time for an internship and work (which I will need in order to make money after being in Paris… and in order to survive once I graduate)! I already am planning on applying for this internship I got an email about from the Career Development center… the application is due December 31st, so hopefully I can figure out how to get it done overseas. The internship is for the summer though, not for the spring. If I can’t get an internship for the spring I’m not gonna sweat it and instead just work a lot at ATL!

Anyways, after registering I was about to go back to bed, however since it was about 7:30pm in California and 8:30pm in Colorado, all my friends and family were online. I got excited and talked on AIM for over an hour to my sister, dad, Laurel, Patrick, Matt, Ava, and more! It was nice to catch up with them! I finally forced myself to go back to bed at around 4:30am. I woke up the next morning at around 9:30am… Zoe had already gone to class. I used my computer, got dressed, and headed home. At the apartment I had just enough time to change and head to class. The verb test went well and after French I walked over to the AIFS office with Kiki… we ate baguette sandwiches on the way. The office was verrrrry crowded – tons of people using the computers. My mom called right after I got there, so I chatted with her for a bit. I had literature class at 3:30pm… we didn’t get our midterms back unfortunately – instead he lectured for 2 ½ hours!

After class I had been planning on staying around in the 5th because our Café Abroad team was supposed to meet at the Long Hop bar at 6:30pm. I already knew that Drew wasn’t coming – I had received an email from her at the end of last week saying that one of her classes had been rescheduled for Tuesday. I wanted to make sure Alex was coming and that I wasn’t wasting my time, so I texted her. After no response I called her, and lo and behold she said that she had just emailed me – she was swamped with work and wasn’t going to be able to make it. Good thing I called her… it’s not like I would have been able to get that email for a couple of days! So I headed home and right when I got home I got a text from Julia saying that she wasn’t feeling well and wasn’t going to be able to make it to the meeting. Seriously? So I’m glad I went home because I would have been waiting for those girls alllll night. I am planning on writing a nasty email to them later this week saying that they can’t keep flaking out… and if they do flake out they need to call me (not email) at least one day before! Grrrrrrrr.

This morning (Wednesday) I did not want to get out of bed… I was sooooo tired! I haven’t been sleeping well recently, just tossing and turning all night so it’s not easy to get up at 7:30am! I finally dragged myself up and caught the bus to class. Simone was there!!!! She had made it back safely the night before and she looked so exhausted! We got our midterms back – I got 196/200!!!! I was very proud! Even though I got a good grade, I still was super frustrated with the teacher. She proceeded to go over the test and tell us everything we did wrong. She concentrated at first on presentation – we were supposed to write on clean pieces of paper (not torn from a binder), we were supposed to give spaces between paragraphs, and we were supposed to write in pen. She gave five extra points each time we did one of these things. I got ten points extra (I hadn’t written in pen) – I was a little pissed because you know, it would have been nice if she had told us these requirements BEFORE we had taken the test, not after. French teachers are horrible and crazy… I hate it. As much as there are some Chapman teachers I don’t like (aka Sparks), I will be glad to get back to American teaching. Regardless, if I do as well as I did on the final, I should be okay… even though she is making the final worth 10 points more…

Zoe didn’t make it to class – she texted me and said she wasn’t feeling well… strange because later she told me (without inviting me) that she was going out to a fancy club tonight with Madison and Jenna…. Uh huh. We were supposed to go shopping after class but I was tired and it was freezing cold even with the sun out so I went home. I am planning on doing some major shopping and flea marketing this weekend!

———

Thursday I slept in and went to class as usual. She held us over in class for almost 15 minutes!!!! I was super mad because I had to get to fashion class on time. Although I did get 17/20 on my test which I almost shouted with joy for! Thankfully, Kiki and Leora waited for Maria and I and we took the metro over to Montmartre together. Kiki and I grabbed some lunch before heading to ESMOD… however they messed up my order – I asked for a tomato and mozzarella panini and instead I got a tomato, mozzarella, and tuna panini. I did not realize the mistake until I had already bitten into the sandwich and I almost gagged. I had them make me a new one while I washed down the nasty taste with a delicious chocolate éclair. Fashion class went well, just more note taking. We covered the 40s, 50s, and 60s fashions, all of which was super awesome and interesting… I can’t wait for next week when we do the 70s!

Our teacher also let us know that she had arranged for us to go take a private tour of Yves St. Laurent’s archives! Holy crap its gonna be freaking cool. Unfortunately the only time slot they had was during French class, but I think I can afford to miss one class for this once in a lifetime opportunity! It will be seriously amazing. We got out a bit early from fashion and I booked it home in order to change before going to the theatre. I had tickets from AIFS to see the French National Orchestra play at the Théâtre de Champs-Elysées. Simone didn’t want to go so I took the bus over to Alma-Marceau by myself. Luckily I was sitting with other AIFS kids though so I wasn’t alone. Something strange we learned – you are supposed to tip the docents who seat you! I got away with it somehow (although the lady did give me a funny look when I just took her directions to my seat and left… I didn’t even need her help but she stopped me and asked anyways). However, one of the other students told me that their lady had demanded a “service” and they had to dig out a couple euro. While I was waiting for the show to start I observed the docents making BANK… each of the dozens and dozens of people they sat gave them a couple euro!

The concert was lovely! They played two pieces – the show lasted for about 2 hours. I had forgotten how much I love classical music. The national orchestra was excellent, really fantastic. I felt so sophisticated going to the theatre with all the rich French people. Granted I was in the second to last row from the top, but the view was great (I could see the entire orchestra) and the sounds were amazing!

After class on Friday, I met up with John and some of the other students for a quick tour of the Pantheon. It is a very, very old and beautiful building – it was very cold inside but very spacious and grandiose. We went down into the crypt and saw Victor Hugo’s and Marie Curie’s graves, among others. After the tour I stopped by the office to use the computer before coming home – I was so cold!!!!

I napped and did a little homework and Simone and I went and got Chinese food for dinner. We ordered too much as always and stuffed our faces with greasy food and then proceeded to eat a whole package of Hairbo. The food comatose set in and I spent the majority of the evening laying in bed watching Star Academy (my favorite French show – basically French American Idol). 50 Cent and Boys to Men were on it! I finally got myself together and at midnight Simone and I headed over to St. Michel. We met up with Allison and her friends and went to Highlanders. We met up with more French and American friends at the bar and had a good time for a couple of hours drinking and dancing. We left around 3:30am – Simone and I walked all the way home in the pouring rain! Luckily I had brought my umbrella!

This morning I got up around 11am and went over to rue Rivoli do to some shopping. I wasn’t very successful as usual, although I did succeed in loosing my brand new hat (grrrrrrrr) and buying some holiday presents. I got some more present ideas and some more shopping ideas though, so I’m not too discouraged. I hope the flea market tomorrow is fun! Anyways, around 1pm I met up with Zoe and some other girls at the Louvre for a wine tasting event… it was so much fun! For about 2-3 hours for 15 euros we walked around this huge ballroom in the Louvre tasting wine. We had red, white, and champagne… it was glorious and so much fun! As well as drinking a lot of great wines, I learned a lot – how to sample wine and how great wine is made. I definitely feel smarter J. After we had had our fill of wine (remember it was only 3pm in the afternoon and I was getting tipsy), we left. I went into the museum for a little bit, making use of my pass. I wandered around for about an hour in the Richilieu wing, looking at the French and Italian paintings. My favorites were the one Degas I found (obviously) and these huge, and I mean huge, 17th century paintings by this French artist (whose name I can’t recall). Seriously, these paintings were ginormous, at least 20 feet wide! They were grand and beautifully done!

I headed home tired after that and made it back (after deliriously riding the metro the wrong way for two stops). For the rest of the day I napped (my new favorite pastime) and ate dinner in preparation for going out tonight… probably not for very long though!

—–

So Saturday night we ended up not going out… it was pouring down rain and we were tired. I was kind of upset though because I was supposed to go out with Simone and her friends but she didn’t really try hard to include me in her plans. They left around 8:30pm and I never heard from her once all night. Zoe and I made plans to meet up with Florent and his friends, but we ended up canceling and just going to bed. I slept in even though I had gotten a full night of sleep. It was still pouring down rain today but I really just wanted to check out the flea market. It took about 20-25 minutes to get there. Zoe and I braced the rain and wind and browsed through the stalls for about an hour. It was interesting – you had the tacky, cheap booths filled with shoes, clothes and jewelry and then the antique shops as well. It was cool but I could tell Zoe was not having fun… plus we were soaking wet. We ended up going home soon after. I definitely want to go back maybe with my mom and when it isn’t raining!

Monday morning I went over to the AIFS office (it’s becoming a ritual unfortunately) to pick up my new meal vouchers, use the computer, and talk with Danika.  The first two parts went very smoothly… the last not so much.  My goal was to talk with Danika about my cours practique grades which I am very confused and frustrated about.  I could write for hours about our conversation and how she did not help me in the least (only frustrate and anger me more), but that would be pointless and even more upsetting.  To say the least she did not help AT ALL, which I predicted, and forced me almost to tears.  Regarding grades I have now succeeded in getting no help from my professor, no help from Danika, no help from Katie Roller at Chapman, and as of Wednesday, no help from Jessica Burns from the US AIFS office.  So its looking like I might be getting Bs and Cs in all my classes which will drop my GPA significantly and unfortunately make me regret part of my coming to Paris…. Not that I don’t LOVE it here – its just that grades are very important to me!  We got an evaluation of AIFS to do this week and as a matter of fact they received quite a poor review from me.

Minus the grades issue, this week has actually been pretty good.  I signed up for some cool things to do next week in the newsletter (Montmartre, the Concierge, and a Seine boat tour), went out to fabulous Indian food with Simone and Allison, did a little shopping, and got the highest grade in our Literature class on my midterm (granted it was only a 24/30 which is barely an A by French standards, but our professor said it was excellent and that a 15/30 was great).  On Tuesday night I succeeded in eating half of a large Domino’s pizza by myself (it was marvelous)… I blew of Café Abroad to fit in with the other members of my group… I don’t know if we’ll ever meet again because most of them are leaving in less than 3 weeks.  Anyways, I prefer working by myself… I get more done!

I found out about two internships that I am going to apply for – one for the spring (a fashion media internship in LA) and one for the summer (a communications internship in LA).  They both sound really cool and I’m hoping that my stint in Paris and my most current internships/experiences will help me out!

Hanukkah started on Tuesday night – I am improvising with tea lights (and no presents L).  It makes me more excited for my mom and my sister to get here… which is in just two and a half weeks!  Tonight (Wednesday) after a long day of classes, I had my first Parisian movie experience.  I went to go see The Golden Compass with Zoe, Megan, and Paul – it was so fun!!!! Very different from the US, but great all the same.  The movie was in English with French subtitles – it definitely helped that I had read the book!  The characters were great, exactly how I had pictured them.  I’m anxious to see if they will do the second and third books as movies – they better because this one kind of left on a cliff- hanger just like the book did!

I am excited to get a full night’s sleep tonight in preparation for another long day of classes tomorrow.  I think we are going out tomorrow as well… always fun!  And this weekend I want to do a lot (besides homework) – some vintage shopping, maybe a museum or two, and of course clubbing.  Oh the life of a Parisian student…

——-

Thursday was another lovely day filled with classes – I skipped phonetics however in order to go to fashion which was a great treat.  Fashion class was sooooooo long!  She kept us from 3pm until almost 7pm!  It was ridiculous… it was also our last class before the final.  Next week we are going vintage shopping and to the Christian Lacroix exhibit.  After class I went with Courtney and Kiki to H & M – I didn’t find anything even though I tried some things on.  I went home and rested until around 11:30pm when I went and met up with Kiki, Courtney, Libby, and Florent for drinks in St. Michel.  It was pretty dead and not very fun – I ended up getting a taxi home around 3am.

Friday morning I got up and went to the organic market on Raspail on my way to class.  I didn’t buy anything because I had nothing to carry it in, but I will definitely be going back if and when I need groceries – everything looked delicious and fresh!  In phonetics that day we had a test.  It was a disaster, literally.  I am dreading getting the tests back.  There was an oral part where you had to repeat 10 sentences and then a listening part that I know I completely failed.  Worrying about my grades has started to consume my life – I’m freaking out.  I did not come to Paris to get 18 credits worth of horrible grades.  It would severely hurt my GPA and put me in danger of losing my scholarship and being in the Honor’s Program.  I really hope things turn out all right… thats all I can really do – depend on hope.  I feel like at this point, things are out of my control which SUCKS SO BAD!

After failing phonetics I went to the internet café by my apartment for the rest of the afternoon.  I had hoped to go out that night but nobody wanted to do anything.  So instead, I watched Star Academy (my favorite show!) and went to bed.  I got a good nights sleep and this morning (Saturday) I went to a museum that I had found out about in the 16th… it’s called Musée Marmottan.  It’s a small, hidden museum that is home to a huge permanent collection of Monet’s masterpieces.  It’s located right by Bois de Bologne, kind of like Paris’ central park – it was so beautiful over there.  All the families were out in the park with their kids enjoying the cool morning.  Anyways, I finally found the museum.  It was outstanding!  As you know, I am quite partial to the impressionists, and Monet was a genius.  They had dozens of rooms filled with his works and you could get right up close and see the mastery.  They had one of my favorite’s of his – an impressionistic sunset over a harbor.  Simply amazing!  After I had gotten my fill of paintings, I walked back to the metro and headed east.

I got off at Pont Marie in order to go over to the Ile St. Louis.  By this point, it had started once again pouring down rain.  I typically like rain, but its getting to the point where the wind-rain combination is forcing me to stay inside, alone, which is no fun at all.  Regardless, I tried to bear it for the rest of the afternoon.  On the island, I went to Maison Berthillion, something I have been meaning to do for a very long time.  It is a famous ice cream parlor, and yes, even though it was negative 5 degrees outside, I got ice cream and it was fabulous.  They have all kinds of wonderful different flavors – I got a small cone of white chocolate… yum yum yum!  I ate my ice cream and walked into the Marais, hoping to stop and get some Jewish food for lunch but the restaurant I wanted to go to was closed.  Instead I ended up meeting up with Zoe and we walked around shopping for a while in the Marais.  None of us bought anything really – its so hard to stay motivated when you are soaking wet!

We stopped by Pompidou for lunch which ended up being a great idea.  We sat by the window and dried off as the rain poured down outside.  I got some coffee and a ham and cheese crepe – both super good.  We had a nice leisurely lunch, being warm and chatting.  Zoe is leaving in 2 weeks now and she is so excited to go home.  As much as I don’t want to leave Paris just yet, I have been quite homesick recently – probably due to the holidays and the loneliness and the pictures of my friends on facebook all happy together without me.  I am glad that my mom and my sister will be here soon – I am excited to be distracted and have company to take around Paris with me.  All the rain and schoolwork and the being alone has made me wish I could go home, but I know that its not time yet – I still get 7 more weeks to soak up as much Paris as I can before going back to the reality of life in the US!  I am confident in saying already, though, that this experience has taught me so much, shown me so much, and has let me know myself so much – I wouldn’t change it for the world.  Parts of the study abroad experience have been as I imagined, other parts have not been as I imagined.  Not everything is perfect and romantic and ideal, but hey, that’s life.  I truly believe everything happens for a reason and this is just another experience that I feel lucky to have had – it has truly changed the shape of my life!

Whew that was a very sentimental side note.  Anyways, after lunch we pretty much just headed home – we were wet, cold, and tired.  I hate winter!!!!  I realize know why I moved to California for school – I am a fair weather person for sure!  I plan on spending the rest of the day indoors, sipping tea, staying warm, probably saving all my homework and such for Sunday.  And we better go out tonight – I have to get in all the legal drinking I can… something I will sorely miss back in the US!

——-

Saturday night I went out to Café Oz with Simone and Zoe.  It was actually a really, really fun night – good crowd, cute boys, and free drinks from the hot bar tender!  We danced the night away and ended up walking home after we had worn ourselves out.  The night was just about perfect, except for the fact that my money was stolen!  I am soooooo upset!  I went to go buy some candy from the vending machine in the metro on our way to Café Oz and found that my little money purse which I keep inside my wallet was gone – it had 50 euros inside (that’s almost $80 and god knows I can’t afford to be losing money right now)!  I am frustrated because I just can’t figure out how it got lost/stolen… I remember putting it inside my wallet, which in turn went inside my purse, which was zipped and at my side all night long.  And it had to have gotten lost/stolen between the time I left the apartment and the time I transferred metros.  Literally 15-20 minutes worth of time.  Uggggggggggggg – all the consolation I have is that my entire wallet was not stolen or my passport or my phone or my camera…. Just cash.  So that is lucky, but its still no fun losing money.  Plus I lost the cute Little Prince purse that I had bought in Cannes.

Sunday I slept in and lounged like I normally do.  I did homework, cleaned, and watched TV.  I waited for my mom to call, but unfortunately she never did!  I think she might have been skiing this weekend… I made dinner at home and after Simone and I got all bundled up and headed over to the Arc de Triomphe.  It was about 9pm and when we got there – we bought tickets and hiked the long spiral stair case to the terrace.  It was freezing cold up there but the night was so beautiful – everything was lit up: the Sacré Coeur, the Eiffel Tower, the Tuilleries and the Ferris wheel and of course, the entire Champs-Elysées.  It was breathtaking, just like all the other views I have seen in Paris.  It was so beautiful being up there at night… truly magical.  We hung out for a bit, taking pictures and relishing in the utter beauty that Paris has.  Finally, after we were numb with cold we reluctantly went in and left.

We walked town the Champs-Elysées from the Arc towards Concorde.  We stopped on the way to get deliciously warm Nutella crepes.  Simply fantastic – it was a lovely winter evening in Paris.  Unfortunately, its back to school tomorrow… only two more weeks until break!

Greve = Grave November 19, 2007

Monday morning I woke up and headed over to the internet café down the block. I got my lovely steaming cup of café au lait and used the internet… updated my blog, my facebook, my email, etc… I also checked on registration which of course showed me that already my classes are filling up. Gotta love it. I went back to the apartment for some quick toast and honey and then it was off to French class. After French, I went back home to drop off my school stuff and immediately turned right back around and went over to the Maurais to meet up with some other AIFS students and John at the Picasso Museum. The museum was great – it had a huge variety of Picasso works and I spent a wonderful two hours browsing through Picasso’s fantastic work – he was truly a talented artist.

After the museum, Simone and I went home to do homework and rest a bit. On the way back we walked past this really cool Jewish restaurant that I really want to go back to – they serve falafel, bagels and cream cheese, pitas, and potato latkas…. Yummmmmy! However, we went out for Indian food for dinner which was equally marvelous. I had a chicken and spinach dish and some naan. Tomorrow morning I am going over to the hotel where my mom’s friend Adele is staying… it’s in the 9th near where my fashion class is. It’s a bit of a trip, but I need to get over there before the strike starts on Wednesday. I guess my mom gave her something to bring to me…. What could it be?

——–

This morning I woke up and headed over to the Montmartre area to go to Adele’s hotel. They ended up still being there, so I went up to there room to see them. They were very nice and glad to see me! However, I got a big disappointment… I guess my mom had been planning on giving them some refried beans to bring to me since I have been craving them over here and I can’t seem to find them ANYWHERE. But, they ended up not being able to get in touch with my mom before they left because she was on a bike ride (of course) and she wouldn’t pick up her cell phone (of course). So when she finally called them, they were already at DIA – and you can’t exactly buy refried beans there. So she got my hopes up for nothing! Well not absolutely nothing I guess… Adele managed to find these spicy chili mix where you add veggies and sauce to these beans and you get chili and also she brought these chocolates from Colorado which were very good (I ate them all at once). It was very nice of them!

Anyways, they invited me to go to Musée d’Orsay with them which I really wanted to do, but I didn’t have time because I had to get to class. So instead I rode the metro with them and got off at my stop to drop off the things they had brought me and then I headed off to class. After French class I stopped quickly at my favorite patisserie that I go to everyday (its cool – they know who I am now!) and got a quiche and a chocolate croissant. Then I went over to the office before my Literature class, picked up new meal vouchers, used the internet, and did my French homework. Literature class was fine… apart from the fact that I’m pretty sure I fell asleep at one point.

We ended up canceling our Café Abroad meeting yet again… I don’t feel as guilty this time however, for several reasons. One, I have not missed a meeting yet, two, I’ve written 2 articles in the past week, and three, the metro strike is supposed to start at 8pm tonight meaning that I would have had to walk home from who knows where in the freezing cold and the pouring rain. So since I had no meeting, Simone, Alison, and I went for dinner — at a Mexican restaurant!!!! Simone and I had seen it on our way to class. Of course, it turned out to be a TOTAL letdown… I got a chicken burrito. The only good parts were the tortilla and guacamole. It was overpriced and they didn’t accept our meal vouchers. And no refried beans. Simone got our waiter’s phone number though, so good for her!

So as I mentioned, there is another metro/bus strike starting tonight and it is being rumored that it might last for an entire week. Greeeeeeeeat. This means that I will be walking to class for the rest of the week in the freezing cold rain, not to mention my fashion class will probably cancelled yet again. Plus, I’m supposed to go to the Musée Carnavalet for Franco-American relations by next week which will not be possible without the metro due to the fact that it is in the Maurais. As much as I love Paris’ public transportation, this is NOT COOL!

——-

This morning I was planning on getting up at around 7:30am in order to take my time before walking to class. However, my bed was so incredibly comfortable and warm; I didn’t get up until 8:15am! Simone and I left for class 15 minutes later, marching for half an hour in the early morning cold. There were only four of us in Franco-American Relations, but our professor still held class as usual, even though the strike had prevented the majority of our class from coming. My French class was also very small, but we all got brownie points for coming! In class, our professor went over the format for the final exam in the class which will be January 19th (a Saturday… bleh). It’s three hours long – a grammar/vocab section, a dictée, a listening comprehension section, and a redaction (essay). Plus, there is a separate oral test. INTENSE… I’m already scared. The cool part, however, is that I found out that after I return from my two weeks of holiday break, I only have two weeks of class left… the third week is completely free! So that means that my last week in Paris I have free to do whatever I want, no school, plus I think that is when Ladan is here! How perfect is that?

After class I stopped by my corner patisserie and grabbed an excellent brie and ham baguette sandwich. On the walk home I also stopped by this health food store I had noticed early this morning. It was like a smaller French version of Trader Joes. I picked up some tofu and some vegetarian spring rolls… I wanted to buy more but of course I didn’t want to carry it and it was quite pricey. I got home and spent the rest of the afternoon doing homework, studying, and going over my notes – I have two midterms next week. I have also discovered French television… I have a TV in my room that gets about six public channels. Since my French is A LOT better now, I can understand more. I watched part of Freaky Friday dubbed in French, a French soap opera, some game shows (like French wheel of fortune), and some reality show…. Très interessant. For dinner I made rice and the vegetarian spring rolls I had bought – they were somewhat bland, but good.

Tomorrow the strike is meant to continue… I am planning on walking to the AIFS office in the morning, then to Raspail for class. I have a hunch that if the metro isn’t working by noon, fashion class is going to be cancelled yet again. Grrrrrrr. The upside is that I would have the afternoon off to do something, maybe go to Hôtel des Invalides. I just hope the strike stops by this weekend so I can go out!!!!

——-

Thursday was a looooong day. I woke up early and headed out on foot to the AIFS office. I had never walked there before, but it actually turned out to be quite simple. Apart from the fact that it was freezing cold, it only took about 25 minutes, just walking straight down Saint Germain until I reached Saint Jaques. I used the internet for a good hour, printing off notes to study, getting information for a presentation, etc. I had a quick talk with Danica about grades and flights homes – all semantics. So I guess in France they use the 1-20 grading system… it’s a whole lot harder and stricter than in the US – hardly anyone gets an 18, 19, or 20. To get an A, I’ll need to get a 16… so I’m keeping my fingers crossed!

I left the office allowing myself a good 45 minutes to get to Raspail… it only took about 30 or so. I stopped and got a sandwich to eat after class before heading into the building. We worked hard in French, lots of grammar and of course lots of homework. After class we found out that our fashion class was still being held… our professor was on her way into the city. This was a dilemma because even though I love the class, we were met with the dilemma of figuring out how to get all the way from the southern part of Paris to Montmartre – a good 40 minute metro ride away. I was with Maria and we finally decided to try our best to get there… a lot of people gave up right away, but I was determined to make an effort. We ended up being able to get on line 4, however it was so crowded I could barely breathe. I was standing on my tippy toes, wedged in a corner. Each stop took like 10 minutes because half the train would have to get out to let people out and then they would have to get back on, and then even more people would try to get on. It was ridiculous – people were angry and fussy. I finally reached Chatelet where I had to transfer and the man standing next to me had to literally push me off the metro so I would make it off. It was actually pretty scary – these guys actually got into a fight and this lady got pushed out of the car and fell on her face on the cement and started crying. Oy vey.

I transferred to line 14 which is the newest line – it is all automated so it can run without drivers. The cars were spacious and clean. I got off at the end of the line and had about a ten minute walk to class – I made it! I was the first one there – Maria made the train after mine. There ended up only being 8 of us in class (Jill ended up walking for two hours to get there)! But our teacher held class as usual – she was very, very grateful to us for making the effort to come. She lectured for 3 and half hours and even though it was long, it was so interesting – I love it! Next week, we get to go shopping for the class and then she is going to take us all out for hot chocolate!

After class, I was able to take line 12 home – even though I had to wait about 20 minutes for it to arrive. It was better than walking outside in the freezing cold dark though! I got home, warmed up, ate, and did my homework. Later on I met up with Florent at a bar for a little bit (I was able to catch the bus) and then went home and slept deeply!

Friday I slept in until I had to get to French. I had to walk again – the metros still weren’t working. In class we did a practice final test – well part of it anyway, the oral comprehension part. It wasn’t too difficult, but I am glad we are already starting to practice. Our teacher then assigned us a verb test for Monday, an composition for Tuesday, another composition for Friday, and reading homework. Uggggg. Plus I have two big midterms next week – lots of studying to do! After class I walked over to the Montparnasse Tower to meet up with some of the other AIFS kids. I was early so I stopped into the nearby Monoprix. It was so huge! I got some toiletries and then perused the food section downstairs and ended up getting some more cheddar cheese and tortillas… and I found some baked beans!

At around 3pm we met at the tower and took the elevator up. It is the highest building in Paris, even higher than the Eiffel Tower. You can go up to the very top out in the open air and you have these breathtaking panoramic views all around you. It was so thrilling and amazing… I even forgot how cold it was up there! You can see everything up there all at once… the entire city. The view was definitely better than that from the Eiffel Tower because like when you are at the Sacré-Coeur, you can actually see the Eiffel Tower! It was a perfectly crystal clear sunny day, and I would have loved to stay up there for hours, but pretty soon my entire body was numb and I had to escape back into the warmth of the building!

I had to walk home from the tower and by the time I got home I was pretty exhausted – I was carrying my heavy book bag and a huge bag of groceries. I took it easy just lazing around for the rest of the afternoon, drinking tea and snuggling into my bed. That night I trekked over to Zoes (I got lucky and was able to catch the metro… however it took over an hour) where I hung out and had drinks with her. We walked up to the Saint Michel area in the bitter cold only to find out that it was completely dead – stupid strike!!!! So we got kebab and walked home and went to bed. This morning the strike was still on – the metro lines I needed were completely stopped. It took me an hour and a half to get home walking/taking the bus. Lovely. Anyways, for the rest of the day I studied and then studied some more. Tonight we are going out for a little bit… I heard that the metro is supposed to be working a lot better but I highly doubt it! Its really a huge drag – I mean I don’t mind walking, but its getting so so so cold here, its just horrible being outside for too long! I guess we shall see what happens… tomorrow is more studying and then more studying. Gotta love school!

——–

So I did end up going out last night… the metro was not working (surprise surprise) so I walked down to this bar called Longhop where I was supposed to meet up with a bunch of friends. The walk wasn’t that bad – I kept warm and it only took about 30 minutes. Thank god for my iPod and PotterCast! It was a really fun night… myself, Kiki, Courtney, Jonathan, Jill, Catherine, Catherine’s friends, and Florent and three of his friends hung out, drank, talked, etc. I headed home at 2am when the bar closed – Kiki and Courtney wanted me to stay but I knew I needed to get some sleep so that I could study during the day. Luckily, Florent and his friends had a car so I got a ride home.

I spent all of today studying and lounging, pretty much like Saturday… I didn’t leave the apartment J I love being a bum! I also cleaned my room and had a lovely chat with my mom. I had totally forgotten that this week is Thanksgiving! We don’t get school off (obviously) and no one talks about it so it’s easy to forget! I am gonna miss Thanksgiving dinner! Plus my entire family (on my mom’s side) is going to be in California this week for a family reunion… I am the only one not there! Even our family friends from France and Holland are going to be there! But hey, I get to have Thanksgiving with AIFS…

In other news… it looks like I am going to be walking everywhere for most of this week. The strike has been going on for five days and is set to continue at least through Wednesday. It’s ridiculous! The strike, unlike ones that have happened in France before, is not a popular one meaning that the general population of France does not agree with it. So now there are protests going on against the strike… its crazy. I’ve never experienced anything like it in the US! So not only do I have midterms this week but I get to walk to them in the freezing cold. Oh the French. However, all this walking means that I can eat as much of whatever I want… so Nutella and pastries here I come!

——-

So it’s only Wednesday but I can honestly say that this week has been one of the worst I have had during my entire stay.  I am sick, the weather is cold and rainy, the strike continues (which means I walk everywhere), its midterm week, and I have phonetics everyday.  Blah…. So now the whining begins… Monday morning I got up around 9am in order to go to the internet café down the street.  As soon as I got up I started feeling verrrry nauseous.  So much, in fact, that I ran down the hall to the toilet because I felt like I was going to throw up.  Next, thing I know I had black-out and came to only because I had smacked my head on the tile floor.  I freaked out!  I felt horrible so instinctively I climbed the stairs to Simone’s room and knocked on her door.  Next thing I know, I had blacked out AGAIN and Simone was shaking me awake as I lay on the carpet in front of her door.  So by then I was officially horrified, not to mention I still felt very sick.  I rested for awhile on Simone’s bed, then went back down to my room and called my mom.  Thank god she picked up – I talked to her for awhile and promised to take it easy.

I got ready to go slowly and then walked to the café.  The cool air felt good – I was very sweaty and clammy.  I enjoyed a nice cup of tea at the café and used the internet.  I then headed to French class and promptly failed my big verb test (I only missed 9 out of a possible 42 questions but somehow that translated into a 10/20?  I hate the French grading system).  Anyways, after phonetics I caught the bus home (thank the lord), took a nap, did my homework, and continued studying for my literature midterm the next day before falling asleep.

Luckily, I felt much, much, much better the next morning.  I walked over to the AIFS office (30 minutes) to pick up the new newsletter and use the internet.  Then I walked over to Raspail for French class (30 minutes) and spent the rest of the time before class having coffee and reading at the corner café.  After French I got lunch and went only to half an hour of phonetics before leaving and walking back to the 5th (30 minutes) to my literature class.  I arrived just in time for the midterm to be passed out.  I wrote for almost 2 hours on the three questions – I feel somewhat confident about how I did, however it is extremely hard to tell because the questions were soooooo vague.  One can only hope!  After I finished, I walked home (30 minutes), grabbed my laptop and walked over to Café Jav (30 minutes) to meet with the Café Abroad girls.  I got dinner and used the internet while we met… we didn’t do much even though it was the first time that we had all been together at the same time.  Out of all of us, it seems like I am doing the most work, which isn’t even that much!  I’m just glad it’s more of an individual internship.  Anyways, we decided to meet next week in the 5th at the Long Hop bar to see if we can hold an event there.  I finished up on my computer and walked home in the rain (30 minutes).  For the rest of the night I studied for my Franco-American Relations midterm… I was exhausted.  If you are good at math, you can see that I walked quite a bit that day – about 3 hours worth.  This strike is really starting to frustrate me!

Another thing that I happened on Tuesday was what I’ll refer to as the Brendon disaster.  On a random whim I had facebooked him on Monday morning telling him to let me know if he ever came to Paris.  On Tuesday morning when I was at the office using the computer, I saw that he had sent me a message Monday night.  It said that oh I’ve been in Paris since Sunday night… what are you doing Tuesday… let’s hang out… I totally forgot that you were here.  I got super excited and called him, telling him that unfortunately Tuesdays are my super busy days and I wouldn’t be free until at least 8pm, but how about hanging out Wednesday.  But he was leaving at 8pm that night (Tuesday).  Dang it.  And he promptly told me he had to go because he was about to go inside Musée d’Orsay (the museum literally one block from my apartment).  I was quite upset.

When I got out of Literature class early, I called him again to see if it was possible to meet up real fast.  But no, he was mounting the Eiffel Tower and he had to go.  All in all, I was pretty mad that he didn’t make more of an effort to see me.  He did say he had come to Paris on a whim, but still, if I had been in London I would have called him up right away!  I mean how many times to we see each other, even in the states?  Hardly ever.  It was really upsetting to me… that’s all it comes down to.

Sooooo… this morning (Wednesday) I had to wake up too early and walk to Franco-American Relations.  She lectured for the first part of the class and then we had our test.  Our test turned out to be ridiculous – like purposely confusing and hard… I had to ask her two questions and both times she made me feel like I was retarded.  Sometimes I really hate her!  I finished as fast as I could.  Plus I have a presentation in that class next week.  Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrr.  French and phonetics passed uneventfully, thankfully, and at last I was done with midterms and tests… until my next French test on Monday.  Oh and all the homework I have.  It never ends!  I am trying to look forward to tomorrow – shopping in fashion class and Thanksgiving dinner with AIFS.  And then I have the entire weekend free to be productive, go sightseeing, and go shopping!  Time for a nap….

—————

Thursday definitely took a turn for the better after a somewhat awful week.  I got to sleep in until French class and after that was done I didn’t go to phonetics (it was pointless because I had to be at fashion at 3pm).  Maria and I got some food and hopped on the metro line 4 which was working surprisingly well and wasn’t very crowded.  We transferred at Chatalet and took line 1 to Tuilleries.  We actually got there with a half an hour to spare so we went and sat in the gardens to wait.  It was a beautiful day – the sun was out and we basked in its warmth.  At 3pm we met up with the rest of our class and started our shopping tour.

Our first stop was the store Colette, a store famous for its exhibition of up and coming designers as well as the staple couture houses.  Downstairs they showcase everything from the newest electronics (like the iPhone) to the latest fashion jewelry (Chanel rings for example).  I spent most of my time upstairs, however, browsing through the clothes.  They have the outfits each exhibited on separate mannequins with coordinating shoes.  The tags are tucked in so you have to work in order to find the price and the designer.  No one was really trying on the clothes – it wasn’t that kind of store!  There were also tons of fabulous bags exhibited in benches around the room.  I was in love and depressed at the same time!  I just wanted to play dress-up and try everything on, they clothes were just soooo beautiful.  My favorites were a brown, strappy Jimmy Choo bag, a grey tulle, strapless Christian Lacroix dress with pleated details and diamonds, the matching shoes by Lacroix (a dull green peep toe, strappy heel), and a emerald green Prada evening gown made of silk and diamonds.  I really loved all the outfits in all honesty!

After Colette, we continued our shopping tour walking down St. Honoré as our two teachers pointed out interesting landmarks.  Some places I want to go back to are Ladurée (a tea house which made the pastries for the Marie Antoinette movie), a couture chocolaterie, and a discounted second hand couture store (more in my budget range).  Our next group stop was John Galliano’s personal label boutique.  Our teachers pleaded with them and they let us come in in two groups, walk around the store once and walk out.  It was very, very posh and the clothes were simply FABULOUS.  He is a genius – the handiwork is insane.  There was this silk, burnt red evening gown that was to die for… literally.

After that we continued walking passed all the famous label stores (Prada, Chanel, Bottega Venneta, etc, etc, etc), making our way to Hèrmes.  We went inside there and spent a good half an hour looking around.  This Hèrmes is the biggest in the world – it is three stories!  We looked at all the beautiful scarves, the clothing line, the exclusive horse riding gear (we actually watched a guy making a saddle), the purses, the jewelry, the home ware, and the perfumes.  I got to see the Kelly bag (which has a waiting list to infinity) – 110,000 euro, alligator skin and diamond encrusted.  I also tried on a couple of perfumes which were exclusive only to that Hèrmes store.

Tired as we were after all that, we made our way back the way we had come on the other side of the street.  We ended up at Angelina’s with surprisingly only about ten of us (there had been over twenty at the beginning, but people kept dropping out unnoticed).  Angelina’s is a tea house that is world famous for her hot chocolate.  So I ordered a big cup – it was delicious.  Basically, its just hot liquid chocolate pudding with cream.  It was soooooooo rich!  I want to go back there with my mom and my sister for lunch because they also serve pastries and macaroons which look divine.

After drinking as much chocolate as I could, about six of us headed out in order to get to the AIFS Thanksgiving dinner.  Getting over there was HELL – it took over 30 minutes.  The metro line 9 was so over packed we could barely breathe.  We finally got there, however, and ran sweating and panting to the building.  The dinner was interesting but very fun.  We had fruit, bread and butter, mashed potatoes, turkey, gravy, wine, and pumpkin pie (not the American kind – more of a fruit pie).  It wasn’t traditional and it made me want American Thanksgiving food even more, but it was still fun and such a nice gesture from AIFS.  We left pretty late and I had to do a bunch of homework when I got home before passing out.

After French and phonetics on Friday I toughed up and did laundry.  I stuffed it all in my small carry-on suitcase and rolled it all the way over to the Laundromat to remember that I hadn’t brought soap with me.  Good thing they sell it there!  I did laundry (30 minutes for washing and 30 minutes for drying) and read.  I carted it all back to the apartment, grabbed my laptop and went over to the internet café.  I used the internet and did some French homework until around 7pm.  Then, I made dinner, lounged, put away my laundry, and watched TV for quite a good chunk of time.  Zoe bailed on going out and Jill was no where to be found with her family (Simone was gone to Florence this weekend).  Eventually, Florent came and picked me up and we went and smoked hooka in the St. Michel area.  It was fun – I’ve missed doing hooka!  We got the apple flavor and drank tea.  It was nice besides the fact that Florent didn’t have cash so I had to pay 20 euros for it.  Oh well….

Saturday I got up mid-morning and headed over to Musée d’Orsay (finally)!!!!  It was incredible.  I spent over two hours there, mainly on the top level which is home to the impressionistic art.  Besides the beautiful works by Toulouse-Lautrec, Van Gogh (his self-portrait), Monet (his hay stacks), Cézanne, Renoir, and many, many others, I was of course blown away by their Degas collection.  They had so many of his original famous works that I got to see in person – it freaking rocked.  There were hundreds of his works lining the walls – his ballerinas, his bathers, his horse riders, and his musicians… it was great.  I went kind of overboard at the gift shop – I bought a book by Anna Pavlova in French that was illustrated with paintings by Degas, a miniature Sansha pointe shoe, a postcard with the ballet master painting, and a medium sized reprint of the four blue dancers painting.

On my way home from the museum, I stopped into this Chinese take-away restaurant.  It is actually really, really close to where I live… and they take meal vouchers so I will be going back.  Anyways, I got some chicken egg rolls, some vegetarian spring rolls, and some pork and rice for lunch.  It was pretty good!  After lunch, I headed down to Rue Rennes to do some shopping.  I mostly just looked around – it was pretty crowded on a Saturday afternoon.  However, I did get a hat, a necklace, and some skinny jeans.  I tried looking for presents but to no avail – I don’t know what to get my mom and my sister or my friends at school… I need ideas (that are inexpensive and small J)!!!!

For the rest of the day I napped, did some homework, and relaxed.  I went out with Zoe and Jill Saturday night to a place by Hotel de Ville called Café Oz.  It was really fun!  It’s a bar, but on the weekends it kind of turns into a club with a cover charge, lots of drinks, lots of people, and lots of dancing.  We drank and danced the night away and even got some free drinks out of the cute bartender.  I walked/took the night bus home in the pouring rain (it felt so good after being in the club… I was disgustingly sweaty)!

Today I plan on being productive – I have lots of homework and I need to do my visit for Franco-American Relations because I have a presentation on Wednesday.  Another lazy, wonderful Sunday in Paris!

a short trip down memory lane… November 12, 2007

Wednesday morning I got up bright and early for my Franco-American Relations class.  How I loathe three hour classes.  They seem to never ever end.  We got lectured at for awhile – one good thing is that our midterm was moved back a week.  We had three presentations, one of which was mine.  It went smoothly and she loved the fact that I had handouts!  After class she congratulated me again, so I am confident that I will get good marks!  She let us out a bit early so I had a little more time to cram for my French test.  The test turned out to be wayyyy hard!  I sometimes get so frustrated in that class.  Since the teacher never tells us exactly what will be on the test, it’s so hard to study everything!  Plus she’ll include random stuff that we learned weeks before or new material that we covered just the day before.  There were some vocab questions that I don’t ever ever ever remember learning.  I asked her about and she just smiled her sweet evil smile and said, oh yes, we had learnt that.  Grrrrrr.  Then she also proceeded to tell us that since our class is 2 hours a day, that means we should be working at home for 2 more hours a day.  Are you serious?  There is no way I have the time or the energy for that!  I am beginning to get a bit worried about how my grades will turn out in this class.  I might be able to cope with a B, but nothing less.  It’s just so frustrating to me because I am working SO hard and putting so much effort into everything she assigns, but I still can’t seem to achieve the scores I want.  I can’t let my GPA get below a 3.5… its just not acceptable for me!  And I don’t want this class to be the one to bring me down – it’s not even for my major, it’s an elective!!!!

Anyways after my stupid French class, I got some lunch, struggled through phonetics (we are practicing our r’s… super hard) and ran out of the building.  I stopped at H & M on the way home (baaaad Chelsea) for some shopping.  I hit a jackpot, unfortunately – I got some black Bermuda shorts (to wear with tights of course), a cute gray tank for 9 euro, a black patterned dress, and a leather jacket (40 euro… not too shabby)!  I decided that instead of getting another peacoat for a ton of money, I would get the leather jacket because it is lighter, I can wear it when I go out, and I can use it when I go back to California (a peacoat will definitely not be useful there)!

I got home, did my homework, showered, and got ready to go out to dinner.  I met up with Florent and he took me to dinner and then out for drinks… it was very fun J.  Definitely a great way to end such a horrible day at school!

Thursday morning I didn’t sleep in and instead went out to the metro stop to get in some internet time.  I had some Café Abroad stuff that I needed to get done, among other things.  AND… I got an email from my mom that said that we are going to Madrid, Spain for the first week of Christmas vacation!  I am soooooooo excited!  Spain was the one place that I have never been that I really, really, really wanted to go to.  It’ll be cool spending Christmas there with my mom and my sister!  Yesssssss I’m stoked!

The rest of the day went by quite uneventfully.  I got my French test back 34/40 – ugggggggg, not okay.  Anyways, the afternoon was spent in 3 and half hour of fashion class, taking notes and discussing slides.  I really like the class, but it’s hard because we’ve really only been in the actual classroom twice.  Plus, there is supposed to be another strike starting next Wednesday which would probably affect the class on Thursday AGAIN.  Gotta love French strikes.

Simone’s friend who is studying abroad in Italy got into town that night so we were planning on going out.  That did not happen however… it started pouring down rain and I ended up staying in, packing and going to bed.  I was very proud of myself – I managed to fit all my things for England into my backpack!  Who knew I could be such an efficient packer.  True, the backpack was stuffed to the brim and I was only going for barely two days, but hey, you’ve got to start somewhere!

Friday morning I woke up early in order to be at the AIFS at 10am when it opened so I could have guaranteed computer use.  I checked-in online for my flight to England and did internet related things.  I headed over to Raspail and picked up a bunch of chocolate croissants to take with me to Julie and Emma.  French class went by as usual – and of course we are scheduled to have yet another verb test on Monday.  I wasn’t sure if the test was simply over verb conjugation or also over verb usage (aka Passé Composé versus Imparfait – the two French past tenses).  So after class, I went up to the professor and asked her politely in French.  She gave me the sideways answer – well yes, the test is on conjugation but there may or may not be other things as well.  Great… what a horrible teaching style – I HATE IT!

I shrugged off my French class and hurried home to get my stuff and head to the airport.  It turned out that some of my AIFS friends (Kiki, Jill, Courtney, Megan, and Libby) were all heading to Amsterdam that day for a flight one hour earlier than mine.  So instead of riding the RER alone, I met up with them at St. Michel and we all took the RER B to the airport together.  I got off at a different station than them, however, and proceeded to have the one and only horrible mishap of my weekend.  According to Zoe and others (even though I was skeptical), there was no need for me to buy an extra RER ticket in order to get to Charles de Gaulle airport – I could just use my Carte d’Orange.  However, I would have to buy a ticket for about 9 euro on the way back.  Needless to say, this was not the case.  My Carte d’Orange is only valid for Zones 1 and 2 and since the airport is in Zone 5 I should have bought an extra ticket before I got on the RER at St. Michel.  Therefore, I was unable to get out of the RER station legally.  And wouldn’t you know, there were SNCF guards there checking people’s tickets as they exited the RER.  I was confused at first when the guard took my Navigo and said it wasn’t working.  He then proceeded to explain that I should have purchased a ticket before I had gotten on the train and that basically I was a retarded American.  Then, he proceeded to write me a 25 euro ticket.  Luckily I had some cash so I paid him and went on my way.  What a pain – but at least now I know!

I made my way into the airport, got in the wrong security line, found the right security line, and went through it.  I got lucky and they decided to rifle through my backpack, taking every single thing out of the carefully packed, very full bag.  The security lady proceeded to tell me that my chocolate croissants were very flat – she deemed by backpack safe and left me to stuff everything back in. Lovely.  I then had a pretty long wait since I was quite early for my flight.  Eventually, my gate was called.  European airports are very different from those in the states.  All the passengers seat in a “departure lounge”.  There are screens around and about 15 minutes or so before boarding begins, your plane is assigned a gate.  You then go to that gate and get on a bus which takes you to your plane.  I was flying an airline called Easy Jet which has free seating – this means first come first serve.  I got lucky and got a window seat near the back of the plane.

The flight was barely an hour long – I napped, played Sudoko and listened to my iPod.  I got off the plane successfully, passed through customs and headed out (it was so nice not having to wait for any luggage)!  Julie was there waiting for me and we headed out to her car.  We had a nice chat on the drive home, the usual things – family, school, etc.  It was hard coming in at night because as we drove into Tockington I couldn’t see a thing and nothing looked familiar.  The Wood’s home, however, was the same as I remember and it was great to see Emma – she is so grown up!  She is taller, has long dark hair, and is very mature.  We had a lovely dinner – Julie cooked Shepard’s Pie (one of my verrry favorites) and I had Ribena and fudge brownies for dessert.  After dinner we sat in the living room, drinking wine, chatting, and watching TV (that was definitely a treat – I haven’t watched TV in months it seems)!  I went to bed around 11pm and slept very, very well.

The next morning we had tea (I had three cups I think!) and chocolate croissants (the ones I had brought) for breakfast.  We then drove to Thornburry where we dropped Emma off at the Leisure Center (it’s still there) where she was working for an hour.  Julie and I went into town to walk around and do some shopping.  I bought a bunch of English candy for myself and Rebecca and some things for my mom.  Julie was great – she bought most of my purchases for me so I didn’t have to withdraw pounds from the ATM!  We walked down to Thornburry Castle, somewhere I’ve never been.  It’s very beautiful – it’s a hotel now with a vineyard.  They have weddings there as well and I think it would be the perfect place for me to get married… I have added it to my list!

We picked up Emma and drove back to their house.  For lunch we had beans on toast, crumpets, and chocolate digestive biscuits.  I was in heaven!  I ate soooo well the entire weekend… it was fantastic!  After lunch, we grabbed our bathing suits and drove to Bath.  We spent the afternoon shopping and perusing the stores… it definitely got me into the Christmas spirit – everyone was out doing holiday shopping and the shops were already decked out with lights, trees, angles, holly, and Santas.  We snacked on marvelous hand-made fudge as we walked about.  One of my favorite stores was the bead store where I bought a couple gorgeous beads to hang on a necklace.  We had an early dinner at a restaurant called ASK – we had Bruschetta and this mozzarella/ham/bread thing for appetizers and for the main course I had this absolutely amazing penne pasta with pesto, chicken, and pine nuts.  It seems simple, but it was divine.  I was stuffed after… I cleaned my entire plate!

After dinner we headed down to the spa – our tickets were for 7:15pm.  The spa is only about a year old – it’s built over the Bath hot springs and its verrrrry cool.  For two hours we got to enjoy to hot springs pools, one on the roof of this five-story building and one inside, complete with bubbles and a lazy river.  There was also a steam room floor with several different steam rooms all with different flavors of steam (lavender, peppermint, etc).  The whole experience was very fun and very relaxing – just what I needed.  After the day in Bath, we drove home, showered, and went right to bed… I was tired!

This morning (Sunday), I woke up around 9am, got dressed, packed up, and headed out for a morning walk by myself.  It was a wonderfully typical English morning – overcast, a slight sprinkling of rain, and refreshingly cold air.  I set out with my camera into Tockington, trekking over the familiar roads and looking at the familiar sights.  It was a huge trip down memory lane… I visited Tockington Manor, the village green, my old house and neighborhood, Olveston, and the public fields surrounding the village.  It was all still there, exactly as I had left it some twelve years ago.  Not much had changed, minus the fact that everything looked a lot smaller to me.  I guess that’s because I’ve gotten bigger!  It was very comforting being there just walking around… I’ve missed the Tockington atmosphere!  It was a very therapeutic experience somehow.  I could definitely see myself living there again one day – I don’t know how or why, but still… I just love the small town, cozy feel – and it’s so incredibly beautiful there!  The huge green fields and the old stone houses – it’s wonderful!

After my walk, I headed back to the Wood’s house.  I got lucky – it started pouring rain the minute I got inside!  Emma was up and we had breakfast – I had some scones and clotted cream (yummmmmmy)!  We spent the rest of the morning curled up on the couch, sipping tea, listening to the rain, and watching TV (a program called Holly Oaks, basically the British equivalent of the OC).  I could get used to that life!  Julie came back from the church (it was Remembrance Day) and made Sunday lunch.  I had forgotten about the English and their Sunday lunch!  It was marvelous… we had roasted chicken, mashed potatoes, gravy, cooked vegetables, and these things similar to pop-ups (a light biscuit sort of).  Soooo good… I seriously love English food!

After lunch it was already time to start heading to the airport even though I was not yet ready to travel again and get back to the reality of Paris and class.  My trip was so short!  I got to the airport with an hour to spare.  I said goodbye to Julie and Emma and thanked them for their wonderful hospitality.  I got a bit nervous once at the airport – the security line was quite long and I got out of it with only 15 minutes left before my gate was supposed to close.  However, the flight was delayed and I ended up waiting for about 30 minutes in the departure lounge.  I was one of the first to get on the plane though, so I got a nice window seat up front.  The flight was fine, but the real fun started once I got back to Paris.  The line for the passport check was miles long and the RER took FOREVER to get into Paris.  I finally got on the metro and back to the apartment.

Whew!  What a weekend… I am not ready to go back to class tomorrow!  The Papillon’s are back which is weird.  They were gone for so long!  The week should be good though… tomorrow I think I am going to go to an internet café in the morning before class to study, etc.  Also tomorrow I get to go to the Picasso Museum which should be really cool!  So its back to Paris and back to Parisian life… it’s weird that coming home from England meant coming home to Paris!  I’m such a European!

the most beautiful city November 5, 2007

So Wednesday I wasted the day away in bed, sleeping and reading. We went out to thai food with Pun – Royal Thai, a restaurant right by the Pantheon. I’ve been twice now and I think Simone has been at least three times. It is definitely one of my favorites. They don’t have Pad Thai but they do have excellent spring rolls and satay! I had been sort of planning on going out Wednesday night, but I ended up staying in so that I would have a full day on Thursday to do things!

Thursday morning, Simone and I went out in search of an Internet café. The one a couple blocks from us was, however, closed due to All Saint’s Day being a holiday in France. So we ended up getting our fix for a little bit out by the metro as usual. About 3pm we headed over to the Eiffel Tower. We met up with Zoe, Paul, Brad, and Joshua there, bought our tickets and began the climb. Over 1,000 steps later (I think) we had reached the second story (right before the tower gets really skinny). We took pictures and relished in the beautiful views. We then had to pay for another ticket in order to take an elevator to the very, very top. The wait was quite long, but it was well worth it once we got to the top. We took more photos and just enjoyed our time up on top of Paris in the freezing cold. It’s weird being on top of the Eiffel Tower because you forget where you are and are constantly looking for the tower – it’s such an iconic Paris landmark… it’s really hard to picture Paris without it! I stayed up there until I was numb with cold – it was so beautiful and so surreal. It’s so amazing because everyday I am in Paris, I am actualizing these dreams that I have had since I was like 10 years old. I can now saw that I have, in fact, been on top of la Tour Eiffel! Lucky, lucky me!

We made the slow descent down (luckily the elevators are free on the way down) and made it safely back to the earth. Zoe had gone home, but the rest of decided we were super hungry and set out for dinner. Joshua took us to this place called Breakfast in America… unfortunately being in Paris has made me crave American food ALL THE TIME. It’s not that French food isn’t good – its excellent in fact – but sometimes you crave what you are familiar with. Anyways, I got an amazing breakfast burrito and breakfast potatoes. I also had some of Simone’s fries. It was so good to taste tortillas, cheese, eggs, potatoes, and bacon – you have no idea! I made all gone and was stuffed afterwards… I couldn’t even muster up the room for a milkshake. But no worries… I feel I might be going back there sometime very soon J.

After dinner we went our separate ways to go home. Florent, the guy I met on Wednesday had texted me so Simone and I ended up meeting him and his friend for drinks out by Saint Michel. On our way there we walked past the Notre Dame – it was the first time I had been so close to it… it was very beautiful and grandiose and I am looking forward to venturing inside of it. Anyways, we went out with Florent and eventually met up with Kiki and Courtney as well. Simone left early and after the first bar we were at closed, we went to another one down the street. It was a really fun night, just hanging out, getting to know each other, etc. I got home about 4am and went right to sleep!

The next morning, I got up around noon because Simone and I had been planning on going to Montmartre. However, she wasn’t feeling well. As much as I didn’t want to go by myself, my desire to visit this section of Paris outweighed my anxiety about going alone. So I set out alone, ready to see some wonderful sights. I got off the metro and had to hike up about ten flights of stairs (since Montmartre is on a hill). After climbing the Eiffel Tower the day before, my legs were starting to ache! Even after I exited the metro, I had to climb 3 more flight of stairs and then 2 more to reach the Sacré-Coeur. It was sooooooo beautiful! The atmosphere was lovely… you could stand on the stairs in front of the building and look out onto the entire city of Paris. I was surrounded by tons of people, musicians, artists, vendors, and shops. I took some pictures and then headed inside the Sacré-Coeur itself. The interior was phenomenal… it’s a beautiful cathedral with candles and colors everywhere. Its huge domed ceiling gives a soft light to everything inside. I sat down for awhile in one of the pew just to soak it all in. I truly felt like I was in a sacred place.

I finished my tour of the inside and headed back out to go up to the dome. Five euros and at least fifteen more flights of stairs later (I was panting like a dog) I had reached the dome. The views from that height were comparable, if not even better than, those from the Eiffel Tower the day before. You can walk around the outside of the entire dome and see these breathtaking panoramic views of Paris. I got some great pictures! I stayed up there for quite awhile actually enjoying the serenity and the feelings I was experiencing. I can honestly say that this was one of the best parts of my stay in Paris so far… and that is saying a lot! I would not mind going back again. When you find a place like that that makes you feel so peaceful and so thankful and so appreciative of beauty, it’s almost life changing. I know that sounds kind of lofty and cliché, but it was such a wonderful experience to see such phenomenal views… it’s really hard to describe! I’ve never really experienced this kind of man-made beauty in the states. Of course we have our beautiful oceans and mountains and canyons, but we don’t have the history dating back to the 17th century which allows for these incredible feats of architecture, art, and culture. It is truly an eye-opening and moving experience, one that I am continually thankful for as I live here in Paris.

Anyways, after I finally climbed down from the dome, I walked away from the Sacré-Coeur into the heart of Montmartre. The streets around the monument around crammed full of cheap tourist boutiques, cafés, discount stores, kebab restaurants, fabric stores, and Greek restaurants. My next goal was to get to the Montmartre cemetery. I had to walk down the main road, which was an experience in itself. The street is lined with cabarets, sex shops, strip clubs, liquor stores, and lingerie stores. Every other word on 75% of the stores was “sex”. These risqué venues were lined up and down the street among regular cafes and Japanese restaurants. It was very strange and amusing. I say several transgender people and I even saw a strip club with about five policeman in front, investigating something. I walked by the Moulin Rouge as well… it wasn’t very impressive (I’m sure it would be better at night all lit up). But I took a picture… it would be interesting to go to a show there, however tickets are very naturally very pricy.

I stopped in at a Monoprix in Montmartre as well to see if I could find anything interesting. And, lo and behold, I did! I walked out of the grocery store with tortillas, cheddar cheese, and skippy peanut butter. Unfortunately it was all verrry expensive (and I only got 8 tortillas, a small block of cheese, and a tiny container of skippy) but I was super excited nonetheless. I have already had two quesadillas to date – and they were both AMAZING!

I finally made it to the cemetery mid-afternoon. I got a map and went directly to Edgar Degas’ grave (I was very, very proud of myself for finding it – there were so many graves there)! I had brought some flowers I had found and took a few pictures. For some reason, being there was an extremely moving experience for me. I actually started crying I was so overwhelmed! Degas and his art have had such a huge impact on my life – for some reason that I truly can’t explain. It was just so wonderful being so close and being able to pay homage to such an important and influential person. Degas’ life and works make me believe in my art and my dancing and I feel so humbled and so lucky that I was able to visit his grave.

After the cemetery I walked through the rest of the Montmartre in the direction of the Seine. I walked down this street that seemed like the dancer district – there were several dancewear shops and studios, including a Sansha store. It made miss dancing and dance classes soooo much! I am so excited to get back to Chapman and dance again. But I will definitely have to get back to that street and maybe buy a leo or something in Paris! Saturday night I went out with Zoe, Simone, Paul, Brad, and Joshua. We just went out for a bit in the Saint Michel area again and we met some more cool Parisian guys. We called it a night a little bit early though so we could talk the metro home at 2am.

Today I worked on homework, used the internet, and cleaned my room. We had intended on going to Musée d’Orsay because it is the first Sunday in November which means all the national museums are free. However, due to this fact the museums were crazzzzzy busy and I wasn’t in the mood to be packed into rooms full of art like sardines in a can. Plus, the museum is right down the street from where I live – one of the many perks of actually living here is that unlike a tourist, I can go see the museum whenever I want! And that is definitely worth 4 euros (or whatever it costs) for me!

——

Monday morning the sun was actually shining, however I couldn’t enjoy because I had class.  The four day weekend went by way too fast!  French and phonetics went by as usual… I’m starting to not like our phonetics teacher so much though.  Whenever I get something wrong, which is quite frequent, she makes me feel like a retard.  The French accent is sooo hard.  I just get frustrated because she hounds on me for speaking horrible French when she can’t even pronounce my freaking name.

After class I went with Simone to the Luxembourg Gardens (she had to go for class).  It was so beautiful!  I’m glad I finally went and I am sure that I will be back very soon.  It is this huge garden/park filled with benches and chairs and tons and tons of people milling around by the gorgeous fountain, sitting and reading, chatting, playing with their kids, etc, etc.  I’ve never experienced such a lovely communal place that was so busy, yet so peaceful.  It was a beautiful day, so that may have explained the amounts of people, but it was simply lovely.  I would love to have a picnic there one day!  I should probably do that before it starts getting too cold!

I left Simone to do her thing and wandered out of the gardens to find the nearest metro stop.  I ended up taking the bus instead which was quite a good choice.  When there is not a lot of traffic and when you don’t have to wait 20 minutes for the bus to come, I much prefer it over the metro.  But I think part of that is because I ride the metro soooo much and it can get a little claustrophobic being underground so much!  Anyways, I got back to the apartment and grabbed my laptop to do some work on the internet.  I finally wrote my first article for Café Abroad last night, so I sent that, posted some reviews and events, checked my email, etc.  We got some great photos this weekend!

After that I came inside to warm-up, do my lovely French homework, shower, and read.  I made a yummy dinner – pasta with pesto, chicken, and parmesan cheese.  I have been getting somewhat creative with my cooking… not so much better at cooking but better at pushing my boundaries J.  I mean the whole first week I was here all I ate were grilled cheese sandwiches.  But I have been trying to be better – Sunday night I made chicken breast and cooked carrots.  I am trying to eat well with minimal ingredients because anything I buy from the grocery store comes out of my own dwindling money supply and I can’t really afford to buy extravagant things.  But that’s the life of a college student isn’t it?

———-

Tuesday classes passed by as usual.  They are always so long, especially with phonetics – its almost 6 hours of class!  Before class this morning, however, I did stop by the AIFS office for a few hours to pick up the new newsletter and use the internet.  There are some fun things coming up including a trip to the Picasso museum, the Montparnasse tower, and a Thanksgiving dinner!  Online, I set up my preferred list for registration.  Now I just have to wait until the end of the month to see what I can actually get into!

After literature I just went home because we cancelled our Café Abroad meeting.  It’s getting a bit frustrating as far as working with the Paris team simply because we have yet to all be together at the same time.  And there really isn’t much we can do without all being together.  So we agreed to meet next week for sure and in the meantime continue to work individually.  I have been keeping up with posting events and reviews every week and working on the city guide.  Plus I now have two articles done!

For the rest of the night I just did homework.  I have a presentation and a test tomorrow! The end of the day kind of came to a sad end – Simone got home and told me that she made the decision to just stay in Paris for the quarter instead of switching to the semester.  I didn’t want to make her feel guilty for her decision, but I am pretty upset.  I’m scared to be alone here for those three weeks in January – most of the AIFS kids will be gone and I will be stuck in the cold studying hard for finals.  I am trying to find consolation in the fact that Ladan will be here for a week (which I am freaking stoked about) and I am going to Amsterdam for one of the weekends.  Mainly, it just got me thinking about home and I got a little homesick.  I hadn’t thought about it for a while, but there are just so many people I am not going to see until next year in the fall (like June, Allie, Melissa, Jenna, and soooo many more of my girls)!  I really want to fully enjoy the rest of my time here… not that I already am not, but I don’t want myself to get down thinking about after break.  It’s going to be amazing having my mom and my sister here and hopefully by January I will have a good deal more French friends!  I am still not looking forward to the whole not having a break between semesters thing.  I literally take my finals on a Thursday and the following Monday I am back in school.  Luckily Simone will be waiting for me at Chapman to help me ease back into SoCal culture!  I really truly do love it here in Paris, its just easier when you have someone with you to go out and do things with!  I know I will be okay, its just scary as usual.  But hey, I’ve made it this far… farther than I ever thought I would be!

Sunday was a simple lazy day. After getting 14 hours of sleep, I lay in bed and watched some OC before getting up, eating some breakfast, and bundling up to go outside. I took my laptop out to the little square by the metro stop to use the Internet for a little with Simone. After I had become thoroughly frozen, I went back inside to warm up – the hot shower I took never felt better! I spent the rest of the day doing homework and working on internship stuff. I had quite a bit and I wanted to be extra prepared for my verb test Monday. That night Simone and I met up with Alison with the intent of going to this Thai Restaurant over by the Sorbonne. It was closed however (Paris literally shuts down on Sundays) so we ended up going to a creperie. It turned out to be quite good – I got a crepe with potatoes, cheese, and egg… yum.

This morning (Monday) I got up a bit early so I could do my sit-ups and stretching (something I have begun to do every morning due to the fact that I am not dancing or stretching regularly – I am walking A LOT though). After that I went down to the post office to mail the postcards I had written and stopped by Franprix on the way home to buy groceries. For the rest of the time before class I studied – which turned out to be a smart move because the test was moderately challenging – she gave us all the very irregular verbs! Plus we got assigned another small test on Thursday over all the grammar and vocabulary we have learned thus far. Oy vey.

I had intended on getting my haircut after class, but to my dismay the shop I wanted to go to is closed on Mondays… I guess I will have to wait until Wednesday. So I simply ventured home, picked up my laptop and my homework and went to check out the new internet café I had found this past weekend. I ordered a coffee and a ham sandwich with my meal voucher and sat in a corner catching up on Internet and doing my homework. It was very pleasant indeed – I will probably be going back since it is only a 5 minute walk away. I was supposed to meet up with the Café Abroad girls to check out a potential event location this evening but we had to cancel due to school work. We are meeting tomorrow though, so no worries. So I had the rest of the day to get ahead on my school work (I made millions of flash cards). Simone and I made dinner together – these frozen crepes that you heat up on the stove. They turned out to be very good and very filling! While we were eating, Madame Papillon came in to talk to us. Her and her husband are leaving for vacation this Friday and won’t be coming back until next Thursday, only to leave again next Friday for another whole week. So she just went over where all the food is, etc. and who to call if we have problems. I love them, but it will be nice to have the house to ourselves!

Tonight I think we might go to a movie and then to bed – Tuesday is going to be a long day for me…. AIFS Office, Cours Practique, Literature class, Café Abroad meeting, homework and more!

——–

Tuesday morning I got up intending to go to the AIFS office with Simone. However, she decided to sleep in so I set off by myself. I was the first one to get there right when the office opened at 10am. I got my next set of meal vouchers from Danika and then went to go get the newest newsletter from John. There wasn’t much new on the newsletter… besides a trip to Montmartre that I can’t go on because I have phonetics… poo. Also, it noted that our fashion class is now going to be 3 ½ hours long each week to make up for the class that was cancelled because of the strike. That is going to be one loooooong class! Attached to the newsletter was our transcript from our French class in Cannes. I got a 17/20 which is an A!!!! I am very proud of myself… now if only I can do the same here in Paris!

For the rest of the time before Cours Practique I used the internet at the office, checked my email, etc. On my way to class, I stopped by Franprix to get a glue stick and some tape… I made a birthday card for my dad tonight! And a birthday card for Zoe, whose birthday is on Sunday. Right before French class I went into the hair cutters that is next to the Sorbonne building – I set up an appointment to get my hair cut at 2pm on Wednesday! I am excited and nervous! Anyways, French class went by slowly and painfully as usual (besides the fact that we got our verb tests back – I got 100%!) and afterwards I headed back over to the Sorbonne area where my literature class is. I had an hour and a half to kill so I found the nearest café (it was freezing out) and sat down for lunch. I had a croque-monsieur (grilled cheese and ham sandwich) and a tomato salad… it was VERY good. They melted the cheese on top of the sandwich which was very cool.

Literature class was good… our teacher is so knowledgeable (and he always lets us out early without homework)! We also decided that he looks like Mr. Bean! We took lots of notes and began a very interesting discussion of Don Juan. After class Simone and I headed over to Café Jav where I was supposed to meet the Café Abroad girls at 6:30pm. We were there about an hour early so we ordered tea and coffee and got cozy with our laptops. Besides the regular catching up on the internet, I finally organized myself and booked some trips! I booked an Easy Jet flight from Paris to Bristol for the weekend of November 9-11th as well as a train from Paris to Amsterdam for the weekend of January 11-13th (both times I leave on Friday night and get back Sunday night so I don’t miss any school). In Bristol, I will be staying with the Wood family and in Amsterdam I will be staying with Josephine. I am so excited! And now I am not too bummed that I won’t be going anywhere for the 4-day weekend… I will have the house to myself and I will have time to enjoy living in Paris without school!

The Café Abroad meeting ended up getting cancelled – Drew and Alex couldn’t make it, but I did finally get to meet Julia (she is very cool, very sweet). So we are just planning on trying it again, same time, same place next week – maybe the four of us will be together face-to-face at some point soon! I headed home shortly after that once my computer died and spent the rest of the night doing homework, writing, and going to bed.

Wednesday morning was rough – I had to get up early to be at class at 9am. Class was fine, we had our first set of presentations and our professor handed out some texts for us to read. We don’t have class next week, but then the following week I present – it will probably be a breeze! We ended up having class only until about 11:40am because people had to leave early for Cours Practique. Mine is in the same building (and I was the only left) so the professor just let me go… I bundled up and walked around the corner to buy a chocolate croissant – it was pure heaven! After Cours Practique I was not in a good mood – our teacher assigned us a worksheet, grammar exercises, reading questions, and not to mention we had a test the next day. Great. Anyways, I left quickly and went next door to get my haircut. I was very nervous, but in the end everything turned out fine. The lady shampooed my hair and gave me an amazing head massage. I then told her in Franglais how I wanted my haircut – trim the bangs, cut the length of my hair to a little under my chin, and layer everything. About half an hour later I had a new, short, styled haircut that I loved! It’s a great change… it’s been so long since I’ve had short hair!

I went home after that, did some homework, took a nap, made dinner, got changed, and left with Simone for the theatre. We had tickets from AIFS for Le Diner de Cons at the St. Martin theatre. We arrived and met up with a bunch of other AIFS people. Our tickets were in the booneys… the very, very top in splintery, uncomfortable wooden seats (I guess we can’t expect much for free tickets – I just hope our seats aren’t that horrible for the ballet). Half of the AIFS people left half way into the first act – I thought this was extremely rude! It was confusing at first, but I soon picked up what was going on in the play – it was very funny and very well done! At intermission, those of us that were left moved down a level and took some empty seats that had backs and cushions. The second half of the play was far more enjoyable! That night I studied some more and passed out…

Today I slept in a bit, studied, stretched, and hurried over to class. Our test was challenging – I got a lot of the preposition questions wrong, at least four of them. I guess I will see tomorrow how I did. We didn’t get assigned as much homework today, thank gosh. We spend a majority of the time discussing the current issue of French social security and retirement, which was quite intriguing. After French, myself, Maria, Kiki, and Leora took the metro over to where the we were supposed to meet up with our Fashion class – at the Musée Galleria de la Mode de la Ville for the 1920’s Parisian Fashion exhibit. We had time to kill so we went and got sandwiches (I also got Orangina and chocolate… so healthy)! It turned out that we didn’t have our museum tour until 4pm, so we ended up having to sit around waiting outside in the cold for over an hour. At least I got to catch up with some of my AIFS friends that I hadn’t seen all week… and everyone was loving my haircut!

Finally, we had our tour – the exhibition was marvelous, but the tour was not. Our tour guide was this tiny French lady who talked quietly… the exhibition was dark and crowded so we could barely hear what she was saying since there were so many of us. Regardless, it was amazing to see the garment and accessories collection. They had a display of “flapper” dresses, outwear (including an original Burberry raincoat), evening wear (Chanel’s original little black dress), professional wear (an original three-piece white Chanel suit), sportswear (Lavin’s decorative “maillot de bains”), a menswear inspired display, garments with international influences, and so much more. Very exquisite pieces!

The tour let out around 5pm (early!) so I went home, used the internet outside by the metro for a little until I froze (and where I found out that the Rockies got CREAMED in the first game of the World Series), and then came back in to eat dinner and catch up on homework and writing. Today, a lot of the AIFS girls were asking me if Chapman was being affected by the Southern California fires. Patrick mentioned them to me a couple days ago, but I had no idea how bad they were! I read up as much as I could about them on CNN.com, but I’m still kind of scared! I wrote to a couple of my friends to make sure everyone and everything is okay where I live and go to school. Its scary being so far away and so far out of the loop when something horrible is going on at home! My thoughts are with everyone there!

So as I mentioned, this is Zoe’s birthday weekend… tomorrow night we are planning on going to Buddha bar, an expensive restaurant/bar. I think I am going to go shopping tomorrow morning before class so that I had something nice to wear! Plus, I need more sweaters – its freezing here!

—————

Friday morning I got up and went shopping! There is an H & M on the way to my French class so I stopped there and stocked up on a few sweaters and miscellaneous things J French class went by slowly as usual – I got a 25/30 on my grammar/vocab test from the day before… not too shabby, however she never really says what is a good grade and what isn’t – and its frustrating because the grading system here is soooo different than in the US. Plus Chapman won’t let their study abroad students take anything pass/fail which is LAME. My French class is going towards elective credits anyway, so I don’t think its fair that I have to take it for a grade when I don’t want to! Anyways, I’ll just stay positive I guess! She did however end up giving us a butt load of homework again – just lovely.

After class I met up with Kiki and Paul and we took a long metro ride over to the east side of the city Père Lachaise cemetery. We got some paninis before we met up with everyone else. John was our tour guide and we took a lovely hour and a half tour through the biggest cemetery in Paris. It was eerily beautiful – the fall colors and the beautiful stone graves were a sight to see… I took lots of pictures of course! Some highlights were: the graves of Jim Morrison, Chopin, Oscar Wilde, and Molière. Isadora Duncan is also buried there, but unfortunately there was construction going on around her grave so we couldn’t see it. John has great stories for all the sites we visited – it is definitely a place I recommend going! There are also some wonderful memorials to all the WWII concentration camps – very moving.

After the tour Simone and I headed home, but on our way back we stopped in the Maurais and bought some boots (she bought some black ones, I bought some brown ones). We then went home (to an empty house – the Papillon’s were gone)! I took a nap, ate dinner, and got ready. We met up with Kiki at the metro and went over to Zoe’s. We ended up missing one of our metro connections and it took us like 45 minutes to get over to her apartment. Finally getting there, we met her best friend Diana who is in town visiting (she is studying abroad in London), had some drinks, and headed over to Buddha Bar. Buddha Bar was verrrry cool – the atmosphere was awesome. We got a table, ordered some very expensive drinks and sushi, and had a great time talking and meeting people. We tried out the bar upstairs after dinner, but it wasn’t very happening so we left and walked around Place Concorde for a while. We seriously considered going to another bar, but ended up just walking home because we were so close. We got home around 3am and Simone and I ate some food (soooo fun) and passed out!

Saturday was lazy day number one for me that weekend. I lay in bed, did some homework, made some brunch, used the internet and napped. I met Simone for dinner that night at a Thai restaurant near the Pantheon. I had spring rolls and beef and chicken satay – it was soooo good. I am still craving Pad Thai, but it seems to me that that dish is an American invention because I have yet to find it here in Paris. I have also yet to find Mexican food – I would KILL for a bean and cheese burrito or a quesadilla. We all know what I am going to be eating the minute I get back to the states… J

After Thai food, Simone and I walked around for a bit looking for a present for Zoe. We bought her The Sweetest Thing in French (she loved it when we gave it to her)! Simone wasn’t feeling very well (too much sake drinking the night before) so I headed over to Zoe’s by myself. I hung out and got ready with her, Diana, and Ali, had a few drinks. I also got a chance to call some people – I left messages with June and Kaely and I actually got a chance to talk to Laurel and Patrick. It was sooooo great talking to Laurel… we had a long chat, catching up, etc. – it was really great to hear her voice! Since I don’t get to talk to friends from home everyday it makes it so special when I get the chance. Anyways, we finished getting ready and headed over to Le Cab, a club in the Louvre area where we met up with Jill and Catherine. Zoe bought a table for her birthday (we each chipped in 20 euros) which included the table and a bottle of alcohol. The club was really fun – lots of people and lots of dancing! The end of the night turned out a little unexpected… but if you want details you’re gonna have to ask for them!

Sunday was lazy day number two – I pretty much did the same thing as on Saturday (plus I had a lovely conversation with my mom). I’m saving up so that I can be super tourtisty for the 4-day weekend. Something interesting did happen during the day though – Simone and I have another roommate now. The Papillon’s had vaguely mentioned something about another guy coming and staying at the house, but they weren’t specific at all. Anyways, the guy’s name is Pun, he is Chinese, he just finished school and is waiting for his visa to come through so he can start working in Paris. He seems very nice and he speaks French and English. I lucked out because his room is upstairs next to Simone’s!

Sunday night Simone and I went back over to Zoe’s where we met her and her mom and went to Bercy for dinner. Bercy is super cute… I will definitely be going back to shop and eat. We had Italian food for dinner – spaghetti and meat sauce and ice cream for dessert. Zoe’s mom is so nice and lovely – it was an awesome dinner.

This morning I woke up to pouring rain. As much as I loved hearing it come down, my opinions quickly changed once I was out in the cold wetness. French class was the same old same old. I had a 30 minute break before my first phonetics class so I went down the street to a boulangerie to get a sandwich, a pastry, and a drink. The shop owner was very nice – my purchases came out to only about 6 euro, but I wanted to use my 9.20 euro meal voucher. He said that if I gave him my name I could come back tomorrow and use the remaining money on the voucher which is super awesome. It’s great when you find helpful people like that! Anyways I trekked back to class in the rain and went to phonetics. It was a very interesting class, definitely unlike any I’ve had before. For the first half hour, you sit in this lab with headphones and a tape player. The teacher says things that you repeat into your headphone/microphone thing and then you go back and listen to what you sound like and then repeat again. After that you go into a classroom and do speaking exercises with the teacher. I never thought it would be so hard to sound French! Anyways, I don’t have to go on Thursdays because of a conflict with my fashion class so it will be more bearable to have the class only 4 times per week.

After class I headed over to the AIFS office where I picked up some mail (my Amsterdam train tickets!) and filled out some paperwork for Danika. I then made full use of the internet/computer – I printed off some schoolwork and my plane ticket confirmation to Bristol, checked email and facebook (I learned that the Rockies lost the World Series L), and to my disappointment, started looking into registration for Spring semester at Chapman. Registration is always SUPER stressful for me and being in a different country with internet access only makes things worse. My registration time is 6:45pm on November 26th. This of course is in California time… translation to Paris time make it 3:45am on November 27th. Lovely. Add to this that I can’t register online for any of the dance classes I want to take (because I’m not a major and I have to get an add/drop slip signed) AND the fact that half of the classes that I was planning on taking aren’t being offered. It’s getting down to the fact that I only have a certain amount of major classes left and I have to fit them in during the next year and a half. Plus who knows how my Paris credits are going to transfer. See why I love registration? Anyways, I plan on dedicating a significant amount of time during the next couple of weeks to being online figuring out my second semester fate.

After leaving the office, I headed home and on the way I charged up my Navigo for the month of November – I am sooooo excited to use it! No more taking out my flimsy Carte d’Orange ticket every time I ride the metro!

————-

Tuesday I got my act together and finally did some laundry.  It sucks being so far away from the Laundromat (plus the price doesn’t help), but I couldn’t stand to wait any longer.  I definitely take for granted having a laundry machine at home… or even the one in Braden that was just up the stairs!  Anyways, I trekked over past Invalides with an entire back-pack and an entire plastic bag filled with dirty clothes.  The whole excursion took 2 hours and 8 euros.  But, I had clean clothes and I was able to take the bus back part of the way.  I got back to the apartment with just enough time to shower, dress, and hop on the metro.  Cours practique and phonetics were fine… I stopped by the Boulangerie I had been to the day before and got a pizza jambon (ham pizza) which was very delicious.  I had to book it out of phonetics for the 20 minute journey over to my literature class.  I ended up being about 15 minutes late (which was actually pretty good – our professor didn’t start until I had arrived and I wasn’t the latest one either)!  Class was fine – more reading, note taking, and discussion.  I legitimately like the class which is good… its been so long since I’ve had a good literature class!

After class I took the metro over to Café Jav to meet up with the Café Abroad girls.  I was pretty early so I ordered a coffee and caught up on my internet.  Alex and Julia ended up coming and we just talked for a bit… nothing new as usual.  We are all kind of doing our own thing because we all have such busy and different schedules.  Hopefully we will be able to hold an event sometime before the semester is over!  As for now, I need to get going on writing an article!  After our brief meeting I went home after a verrrry long day of classes, quickly changed and headed over to Zoe’s.  Her mom had made her, myself, and Ali dinner!  It was great!  Minus the caviar that they almost tricked me into eating, we had tomatoes and mozzarella, baguette, cooked carrots, chicken, wine, and fruit for dessert – yum yum yummy.  Zoe and I had planned on going on to The Princess and the Frog after, but we were both pretty tired and I had a butt ton of French homework as usual.

Wednesday morning I got to sleep in due to the fact that we had no Franco-American Relations class, only French and phonetics!  It was technically the weekend after those two classes (we have Thursday and Friday off) so I went with Zoe back to her apartment.  On the way we stopped and I recharged my cell phone with minutes because I was getting down to like 5 text messages left!  At her apartment I called and left birthday messages for my dad (I was sad I missed him L) and we looked up Halloween costume ideas.  I have some AWESOME ideas for next year… particularly one that I want to do with my girls.  Everybody picks an alcoholic drink and you dress up as that and then you all wear little signs with the name and the ingredients.  Some examples: Sex on the Beach, Mudslide, Irish Car Bomb, a keg, Black Russian, Dreamsicle, etc…. Zoe and I looked up drinks online – there are millions of hilarious choices!!!!!

After we got some Halloween ideas, Zoe, Ali, and I headed over to Place d’Italie to shop for something to wear for the night.  The outing turned out to be super unsuccessful… we found nothing.  However it turned out for the best that we didn’t dress up because when we went out that night NO ONE was dressed up at all and we would have looked liked fools!  I’m saving my amazing costume ideas for next year when I can celebrate the holiday in a country that actually celebrates!

Anyways, I went home on the extremely crowded metro after shopping, got back and did some quick grocery shopping before the Franprix closed.  I made a lovely dinner for myself – chicken, tomatoes and mozzarella.  You can buy ready cut chicken breasts at the grocery store which are super easy to make and taste excellent marinated with pesto sauce!  After dinner I got ready (after we decided that no one was going to dress up) and went back over to Zoes.  We had a few drinks then went out to find some excitement.  The first place we went to was having a closed party so we took the metro to Cluny and went to the bar that Jill and I went to a couple weeks ago.  It was super chill and we ended up meeting some really cool guys.  After awhile we went with them to the St. Michel Pub that was all decked out for Halloween.  We partied there with them until 5am when we finally went back to Zoe’s place and crashed… not too shabby for a French Halloween!

This morning on my way I got to use my Navigo (since its November now)!!!! It was sooooo cool.  I just waved my purse over the scanner and I went through… you have no idea how stoked I am!  Today I’m letting myself veg out because we have no school.  Tonight Simone and I are going to dinner with Pun and our plans for the weekend include climbing the Eiffel Tower and exploring Montmartre.  Should be fun… as always!

Sunday I finally got to sleep in again!  I spent the morning doing my homework, writing in my blog, going through the weekend’s pictures, writing up some stuff for Café Abroad, and cleaning my room.  I vacuumed and my host mom gave me new sheets and towels!  For the rest of the day, I went over to Zoe’s and used the internet.  I think I used it for like four straight hours!  I talked to my mom and my sister on Skype, which was awesome.  I went on Facebook and got a little homesick looking at pictures of all my friends back at school!  I miss everyone so much even though I am having a blast here!

I also tried to start looking for plane/train tickets to do some traveling in Europe, but unfortunately I got frustrated.  It’s so expensive and so stressful!  It’s hard for me to find the balance between staying and exploring in Paris and going and visiting other countries.  It’s hard especially being alone (by that I mean not with family or really close friends) and the fact that I have school everyday Monday through Friday!  I am going to try and not let it get to me too much… unfortunately I am a worrier!

I had dinner with Ali and Zoe and then I took the metro home.  Before I went to bed I made a card for Simone because it is her 21st birthday today!  I gave her the card in the morning before we went off to class… Speaking of, class was nothing special.  We did have a sort of pop quiz on verbs that didn’t go so well for me, but it’s still early.  I met up with Zoe after class and we went and bought Simone a birthday present (some pashmina scarves!) and had lunch at a café.  Tonight we are going out to Indian food for Simone’s birthday and then to a bar afterwards… it should be fun!

——–

Simone’s birthday was pretty fun… Simone and Alison had made a chocolate cake and some vanilla custard on Sunday, so that afternoon Simone and I went to the grocery store and picked up some nutella, some strawberries, some vodka, and some lemon soda.  We carted everything over to Zoe’s (we got some pretty strange looks carrying a cake on the metro) where we met up with everyone.  There was about ten of us as I recall and we all walked to this cute little Indian restaurant.  The food was very good – everyone’s meal came with a free glass of wine and I got chicken curry and garlic nan.  I was able to use my meal vouchers, always a plus, so I will definitely be going back!

After dinner we went back to Zoe’s place and had cake and gave Simone her presents.  The cake was very good (I decorated it – custard filling, nutella frosting, and strawberries and candles on top).  We gave Simone her scarves and she got a couple cards from other people.  We also made Simone her vodka-lemon drink… hey, it was her 21st birthday!  After hanging out for a bit, most everyone left around 11:30pm minus myself, Zoe, Ali, and Jill.  We got ourselves back on the metro and went down to the 5th to a bar called Highlanders to meet up with Madison and Jenna.  The bar was DEAD… it was a Monday night.  But I didn’t get sad because it was the first time EVER that I had seen a somewhat empty bar in Paris.  That’s a pretty good record.  Anyways, Simone was already drunk which was the goal of the night, so we just hung out for a bit and then took a taxi home.  Simone passed out on my shoulder!

The next morning I got to sleep in a little bit until I had class at noon.  French class went by as usual… I am not exactly loving having it everyday but I just hope that it will pay off in the long run!  After class I was done for the day (my Literature class was cancelled) so I headed over to the AIFS office.  We got our taxi refund (16 euros wooooo hoooo) and I got a letter!!!! It was from my roomies – Kaely, Melissa, Ellie, Carole, and Cassie.  It was a Halloween card – it was amazing.  It made my week… it felt so good to get a card from the states!  It’s funny how something so simple made me so happy!  Anyways, after the office, Simone and I went over to Zoe’s to try and figure out some plans for the 4-day weekend.  Unfortunately, Madison and Jenna were there so they took over the internet and I ended up just sitting there.  After wasting enough of my time, I just got up and went home.

On my way home I got a call from Drew, a girl in my Café Abroad internship group.  We finally agreed to meet at a café that night at 6:30pm.  I called one of the other girls, Alex and she was able to come as well.  For the rest of the afternoon I did homework and some errands.  I figured out how to use the Velib system – the public bikes available in Paris.  There are stations like every other block for these bikes that you basically rent and use at your own free will.  Now that I have my Navigo I can use the bikes, however you have to put down a 150 euro deposit in case you don’t return the bikes.  Regardless, for a 7 day pass it’s about 5 euro and then your first half hour is free and then its like one euro per hour after that.  Maybe one day I will use them… I’m sure when my mom comes she will want to try the Velibs out!

At around 6pm I headed over to Café Jav to meet up with the Café Abroad girls.  It ended up being pretty close – only about 15 minutes away.  The Café had free WiFi which was amazing of course.  We chatted, got to know each other, and planned some goals for the semester.  We decided to meet at the same time each week and have 2 events and 1 review to post per week (plus one long article per month).  I set up a Facebook group to try and increase membership to the Paris section of the website and we talked to Dan (our boss) online about organizing an event.  We are going to look into holding an event at a bar in the 5th that has beer pong tables – maybe organize a tournament and have cheap drink deals.  Dan is also going to send us customized Café Abroad beer pong balls and t-shirts.  We made good headway together!  It was nice to finally meet the other girls and actually get a good start on contributing to my internship!  After we met, I stayed and used the internet at the café until my internet died, then I went home and to bed!

The next morning I had to get up bright and early in order to meet my Franco-American Relations class at 9am on the right bank.  It was a very cold and rainy morning, however we proceeded to take a 3 hour walking tour through the city, stopping at all the famous sites involving the American Revolution.  It was interesting – there are actually a lot of sites dedicated to America in Paris, something you would never think of.  There are statues of George Washington, Benjamin Franklin, and even a whole garden/park called Place des Etas-Unis!  Interesting as it was, it was a long walk and I got verrrrrry tired.  Our teacher let us off a little early in order for us to get to our Cours Pratiques on time.

After French class, I stopped by the apartment to drop my things off and get a bite to eat.  I got in trouble with my host mom who told me that according to AIFS rules, I wasn’t allowed to use the kitchen for lunch, just for breakfast and dinner.  I was very embarrassed and a bit confused – I have eaten lunch numerous times in the kitchen.  And what do they expect me to do for lunch?  Its little things like this that frustrate me and make me miss home!  Flustered, I took the metro to Rue Rivoli to finally go get my books for my Literature class (since they never arrived at the Sorbonne or the AIFS office).  I got them at an English bookstore, 50 euro later (plus the October issue of Vouge)!  I headed home after a long day, did my homework, and napped.

After awaking, I packed up my laptop, got changed and headed out to meet up with Zoe.  I dropped my laptop at her apartment and we then walked to Rue Mouffetard to meet up with the other AIFS students at a fondu restaurant.  We had an amazing fondu dinner – salad, bread, cheese fondu, and ice cream.  I was STUFFED!  It was nice to see everyone and chat… I don’t have classes with a lot of the people I got close with in Cannes so its great whenever we are able to hang out!

I walked back to Zoe’s stuff with cheese and bread.  We both got online and after I had checked my email, etc. we proceeded to do some travel research.  Two hours later, we hadn’t really produced any results.  Everywhere we looked into was marginally expensive and we both got more and more frustrated.  I decided (and Zoe as well) that I think I will save the 300+ euro that it would cost to travel somewhere for the weekend and spend the day in Paris shopping and then go to a nice dinner with wine and a fancy club with expensive drinks.  That sounds much more appetizing to me!  I am still torn between wanting to stay in Paris and wanting to take advantage of my location and travel elsewhere in Europe.  To compromise I think I will spend most of my time here in Paris (there is still so much I want to do) and travel a little with my family over Christmas and spend one weekend going to England, London and Tockington.  There is also a trip to Athens I am looking into – the only problem is that I would have to miss class, something I REALLY don’t want to do… we shall see I suppose…

I got a decent night’s sleep last night before waking up a little earlier than usual to get to French class.  This was due to the fact that there is a strike going on today.  This means that all the metros, RERs, and buses are completely closed!  The workers are striking because they are being made to keep the metros open until 2am on the weekends (which I think is wayyyyy cool, but of course the workers don’t).  Anyways, I had to walk to French class which ended up being not back at all – only about a 25 minute walk.  I got there early, so I bought some postcards at a Tabac and went to a café to drink some coffee and write postcards (something I have been meaning to do for quite some time).  Our French class was very small because many people who live outside of Paris were not able to make it.  The class went by fairly fast thankfully!

After class I found out that our fashion class had been cancelled.  Part of me was a little sad (because it is my favorite class), but the other part of me was very relieved because ESMOD is in Montmartre on the right bank – a 30-40 minute metro ride, therefore over an hour’s worth of walking!  So instead, I walked home, finished up my postcards and homework and started getting things done!

Thursday night Simone and I went out to dinner over by les Invalides.  It wasn’t that impressive for the price – I got roasted chicken and mashed potatoes.  Simone, however, ordered escargot – I was impressed that she tried it, but I had to watch her eat it… ewwwwww!  The French certainly have some interesting eating habits!  Anyways, we had dinner and went home.  I finished my literature homework – reading the play Don Juan by Molière (a very intriguing piece of literature) and watched some OC and went to bed.

I slept in this morning, assuming that the metro would be running smoothly again.  I left for class with 30 minutes to spare, only to find that my metro line (Line 12) was one of the ones not working still.  Wonderful.  So I basically ran to class and luckily only arrive about 5 minutes late.  The class was small again but that did not prevent our teacher from assigning us two tests, a worksheet, and grammar book exercises.  Thankfully I was able to catch the bus on the way home!

I got back to the apartment and got my laptop.  Simone found out a couple days ago that there is a wireless connection right by our metro stop.  It’s nice, however, you have to sit outside with your computer which is not very fun in freezing cold weather.  I was desperate to check my email and get some information though, so I braved the cold.  I found some good deals on flights to Bristol which was comforting!  I also found out that my friend Craig from Chapman is going to be in Paris on Wednesday!

At 3pm Simone and I headed over to the Rodin Museum which turned out to be only 5 minutes walk away.  Unfortunately, we got there and John told us that due to the strike the museum was only open until 4pm which meant we had barely 30 minutes to explore the gardens.  We used our time to the fullest, going around and taking pictures and looking at Rodin’s beautiful masterpieces.  John said since we kind of got screwed that we could come back whenever we liked and we would be reimbursed by AIFS.  I will for sure take him up on that offer!

This weekend I am looking forward to going out, sleeping in, and I think I might get my haircut!

———-

So Friday night Simone and I had a huge craving for pizza… and not European pizza (which is great but verrrry different from the American kind).  So we went and tried out our local Dominos which is actually just down the street.  We found out that there are three crust options (basically thin, medium, and thick), three size options (medium, large, and extra-large) and then a variety of topping options (this part was very European – Marguerita, La Reine, etc).  There was also a variety of “entrées” available like cheesy bread.  We ordered a large Marguerita (cheese pizza) on medium crust.  We came back about 20 minutes later and got our fresh, hot pizza.  It was already pretty late and we didn’t think we would be able to make it home so we sat in the park by Invalides and ate our pizza.  It was delicious!

After filling our bellies completely, we went home and put on Wedding Crashers.  Jill came over around 11pm and I got ready and we went out.  We took the bus down to the student district and went to a couple bars/clubs.  We met some French guys and some American guys as well (in town for the Rugby World Cup).  It was an enjoyable night…

We didn’t get back until 5am so I ended up sleeping in pretty late!  After I finally willed myself out of bed, I headed over to Palais Royale.  For my Franco-American Relations class we have to do these visits to places that are relevant to American or French history.  I am doing a small presentation on James Monroe so I was assigned to go visit a street called Rue de Richelieu, an avenue where many of the American Presidents lived on their trips to France (including Monroe).  I walked along the street, taking pictures… it actually also ended up being the street where Molière was born!  I had lunch, talked on the phone with my mom, walked around a bit more, and headed home.  I went to bed about 7:30pm intending on taking a nap and didn’t wake up until 9am the next morning!  I guess I was tired!

For dinner Monday night I went and made soup over at Zoe’s house. We went out later to a bar in the 6th. It was actually really fun – the 6th is where the Sorbonne is so it’s kind of like the student district where all the people my age hang out. It was nice to finally mingle with some actual French people my own age. Simone and I caught the metro home before it closed so we didn’t have to pay an arm and a leg yet again for a taxi.

This morning, we made our way over to the new AIFS office at 10am to pick up the first newsletter. We were the first ones there so we got our first pick for signing up for all the events. I signed up for some way cool stuff: I’m going to Versailles this Friday, Fontainebleu on Saturday, the Catacombes next week, the Rodin museum, the Pere Lachaise cemetery (where Oscar Wilde and Jim Morrison are buried), and a French play. We are also having an AIFS fondu soiree next week. I also signed up for a Brahms musical concert as well at the National Paris Ballet’s production of Paquita. John also has tickets to two other ballets and he said that if they don’t fill up I can check back and get the extra tickets. I am soooooo pumped to see the ballet at the old Paris Opera House. I’m also going to try to get tickets to go see the production of Romeo and Juliet… And I’m also considering signing up for the November trip to Normandy (it’s pricey but it might be worth it).

We found out that we had to come back to the office tomorrow to pick up our Cours Pratique assignments. Dang… oh well… it’s not like I don’t trek all over Paris everyday already! After the office, Simone and I headed back to the apartment where we picked up our laptops and took the bus down to the Internet café I found yesterday. We bought lunch and used the internet. I looked up a bunch of stuff (including the Sansha boutique on the Champs-Elysee – it’s a dancewear brand for those of you who don’t know). After sufficient internet time, we stopped by the apartment again and then headed off to our first class, French Literature in Translation.

There are only about ten people in the class which is great. Our professor is an older man, very nice and very intelligent. It was frustrating at first because his English is slow, but I quickly got used to it. He lectured on the Baroque and Classical periods in France because our first assignment is to read Don Juan by Moliere. I’m actually really excited… I’ve missed studying history and literature! The class is definitely doable – a midterm, a final, and a term paper. Not too shabby! After class we went over to the main Sorbonne building to see if we could buy the texts we need for class. Unfortunately it was closed, but it was cool because we got to see the main Sorbonne campus. It is very beautiful – it’s a shame we aren’t real French students so that we could take class on the actual campus. It was filled with French students in roomy, ornate classrooms and long marble halls. I’m excited to go back later in the week to get my books!

After walking around La Sorbonne, we were hungry. We spotted a Thai restaurant that accepted our vouchers, so Simone and I went in. We got the 8.50 euro dinner menu – the spring rolls were fabulous, but they didn’t even have Pad Thai so I got chicken curry which was super bland and not very good. I miss my Thai restaurants in Cali and Foco! But I guess I didn’t come to Paris to eat Thai food all the time. Anyways, it was very filling which is always good I guess! Tomorrow I have my second class in the morning, Franco-American Relations. Should be another interesting experience!

After dragging myself home last night I watched a movie (Breakfast at Tiffany’s) and passed out. It rained all last night which I loved… it’s so calming listening to the rain! I got up at 7:30am this morning (well actually more like 7:45am J) in order to leave by 8:30am and get to class at 9am. We made it in plenty of time – it really only took 20 minutes at the most. My Franco-American Relations class was interesting… long, but interesting. It’s 3 hours long, but that’s because it ends before Christmas. This is great because I won’t have it for the three weeks that I am here in January! Anyways, there are about eleven people in the class and it is taught by an older French lady. Here English is impeccable, probably even better than mine… although she does speak very quietly. We introduced ourselves and then for the rest of the class she lectured on an overview history of French-American relations starting with the American Revolution up to the Civil Rights movement. We were assigned presentations – we have to do two presentation overall on famous people involved in French-American history and two presentation on what she calls “visits”. My first presentation (only about 5-10 minutes long) is going to be on James Monroe and my corresponding visit is to rue Richelieu where Monroe stayed as well as many other American presidents and ambassadors. Pretty easy for a three credit class I think. We also got an article to read for the next class. The next class is actually not in the classroom – it is going to be a walking tour of the left bank, re-tracing the footsteps of important people and events through Paris.

After class a bunch of us AIFS students hopped on the metro and went to the AIFS office. There we got our Cours Practique assignment cards and directions to where to pick up our French textbook. I got into Intermediate Level 2… out of 6 levels I think. I kind of think I should be higher, but I can only find out when I get to class tomorrow. I haven’t found anyone who is in my class yet, but it’s located at the same place as my Franco-American Relations class which is convenient. We left the office and went back to the Sorbonne bookstore to try and get our French Literature books, but it was closed again! Uggggg…. Tomorrow I will have to try again – we forgot that the close for lunch. So, instead, we went over by the Pantheon to a building where we had to wait in line forevvvvvver to get our French textbook (thankfully it was free)! And of course, there is no close metro stop to the Pantheon, so I had to walk around for some time until I found an RER station… it took way too long to get home!

By that time it was almost two in the afternoon and I was starving. I made myself a salad and a peanut butter sandwich (it was amazing to have peanut butter)! I then read, did homework, and napped. I got up around 7pm and didn’t really have anything to do, so I decided to venture over to the Louvre. It is open until 9:30pm on Wednesdays and Fridays. I got there and waited in line for a bit in order to get a student pass. For one year, it is only 15 euro. It is definitely worth the price because with two visits you have paid for it! And I am for sure going to be going there more than twice… its HUGE! Being my first time, I went and saw the two famous works first: Venus de Milo and the Mona Lisa. They were both beautiful and breathtaking… the Mona Lisa is small just like people say! However, it is still magnificent in its detail and artistry. After hitting up the main works, I just wandered around aimlessly for about an hour and a half. And I think I only got through one half of a floor of parts of two different galleries. Seriously, it’s gigantic! It’s the largest museum in the world – I think I saw mentioned that they have over 35,000 pieces of work. There are three main sections of the museums and the building has four floors. I seriously thought I was lost at about three different times during my wanderings. Thank god for exit signs! I will definitely be going back a lot, to see more art and to wander some more – the building is so beautiful… and almost a little scary at times because I went at night. I just can’t get over its enormity!

I left before the close only to find that the metro stop I had gotten off at was closed! So I exited out into the city and found myself very disoriented in Paris at 9pm at night. I got a bit scared because of the thought of being lost. But the great thing about Paris is that if you just start walking in any general direction, you will soon see a famous monument or a metro stop and you are right back on track. I walked a couple blocks down (in the direction of the Eiffel Tour) and found the Tulieries metro station! Voila – I didn’t get lost. Tomorrow is my first day of Cours Practique… and my fashion class! And sleeping in!

—————

So it feels like I’ve just lived through the two longest days of my life! Thursday morning I allowed myself to sleep in a little, until about 9:30am. I dragged myself out of the apartment and onto the metro in hopes of finally buying my books for French Literature. I got all the way back to the Sorbonne bookstore (actually it’s just an office for the seminar courses) only to be told that the books would not be available for purchase until next Tuesday. Perfect. So I had to walk back to the metro where I got on and rode to Boulevard Raspail where my Cours Practique class is. I got there and received even more bad news – my class is on the 6th floor in a building without an elevator – and between each floor there is two flights of stairs… so that means for the next three and a half months I will be climbing twelve flights of stairs, everyday, Monday through Friday. Grrrrrrrrrrreat.

It took me five minutes just to hike up to my classroom. I was early so I just stood around on the tiny landing crammed up against other idle students waiting for the class before to get out. They finally did and we filed into the classroom. I was freaking out because I hadn’t seen anyone I knew in my class yet. But it turns out that there are three other AIFS students with me – Maria, Shirley, and Julia. I sat next to Maria and we complained about our six story hike.

The class went pretty well. It turns out that the intermediate numbers don’t have anything to do with levels… it’s simply random. They take all the intermediate students and divide them into six classrooms. That reassured me – also, I like my teacher… she didn’t talk too fast and I feel like I will get the right amount of challenge and still be able to get a good grade in the class. Anyways, the professor went over class guidelines, etc… we are required to buy three books (a verb book, a grammar book, and a grammar exercise book) and have a notebook, supplies, etc. We then started some review work (C’est/Ce sont versus Il est/Elle est) and then we paired up for a get-to-know-you activity. I met Angela, a girl my age from Columbia. We had to present our partner and their information to the class (however we ran out of time and Angela and I actually ended up presenting on Friday). We got a little bit of homework, but nothing I couldn’t really handle.

At 2pm, Maria and I hiked downstairs and got on the metro to go to our fashion class. We found where it was pretty easily (its actually in Montmartre)… we had some time to kill so we stopped at a café and got sandwiches for lunch. We then met up with everyone at ESMOD, the fashion school. The fashion class was soooooo cool. It was quite long (three hours), but I am so excited for it. We basically learn about the history of Parisian fashion through lectures and photos, go on field trips (to the Fashion museum, to the Christian LaCroix exhibit, and to the archives of Yves Saint Laurent), and go shopping (we will be taking a tour with a personal shopper as well as going to the exclusive vintage shops in the heart of Paris). I am so stoked – this class is getting me really pumped to follow a career in fashion… our teacher is actually in the fashion business management industry and I am excited to learn a lot from her! She also told us about ISEM (the business school partnered with ESMOD) where you can get an MBA in fashion, basically…. Tres interessante!

After the fashion class I was tired and also a little bit stressed out… when I feel unorganized I get stressed. So on the way home I stopped off at Monoprix to buy a binder, dividers, and some snacks. I went home, organized my life, did my homework, ate some dinner and felt a lot better. Simone and I got ready to go out, grabbed some wine, and hit up the metro. We went and hung out with Aurien at his friend’s apartment (the place we went last week) until the metro closed and we went home.

This morning I got up around 9am, hurriedly got showered and dressed and went in search of a book store to get my French textbooks. I found FNAC (one of the bookstores on the list our teacher gave me), a huge store – kind of a mix between Best Buy and Barnes and Nobles. Of course, they had zero out of the three books I needed. I didn’t have enough time to try any other book stores, so I headed over to Raspail to take my phonetics test. It turned out not really to be a test, rather it was another stressful scheduling event. AIFS messed up again – most of us are taking between 2-4 seminars… these seminars meet once a week in the afternoon or the morning. And we all have our French class everyday from 12-2pm. We were all under the impression that the phonetics class also met once a week, but that is not the case. The class meets everyday for one hour, every other week. So that left most of us, including me, with a problem. I have seminars both in the afternoon and the morning… really the only class that would fit was the 6:30-7:30pm, however the phonetics class that I “tested” into does not meet at that time. Instead, I am in the 2:30-3:30pm class which means every other week I will be late to my Literature class and my fashion class (the ladies doing the placement test did mention it would be possible for me to miss or leave early at times… I just don’t want my grade to be compromised). Perfect… more unwanted and unneeded stress. It’s a shock being in so much class after not having class since May! But some days I will have 6 hours of class in a row… yikes. So much for a Paris vacation!

After I stressed and whined about the phonetics class, I went and got a quick coffee before Cours Practique. I hiked up the 6 stories again… class went by pleasantly, no major bumps or potholes. More review and more presentations. After class I met up with Paul and we took the metro to St. Michel to meet up with everyone to go to Versailles. We took the RER for about half an hour to the palace. We had a guided tour through the palace for about two hours and then we were free to roam the gardens. Versailles is so beautiful! It’s so huge and so extravagant. The paintings, the silk and velvet walls, the hall of mirrors, the crystal chandeliers, the golden beds, the statues, the silver furniture – all of it is so opulent and showy. Our tour guide was full of interesting information about the history of the palace – I learned a lot! I kept thinking of the movie Marie Antoinette while I was there! It’s so crazy how everything back them was regulated and staged. There were some many rules about etiquette and behavior. There were rooms in Versailles simply to show off the richness of the royals (like they had a beds that no one actually slept in and they had rooms simply to greet people in). That period in French history is truly mind boggling to me. After the tour we roamed in the beautiful gardens for a bit, taking pictures, and taking in the majestic views. We took the RER back into Paris where Jill and I went out to dinner. We found this fabulous crepe restaurant in the Latin quarter… I got a ham and cheese crepe and tomato salad – so wonderful! I was planning on going out, but I decided to stay in and rest up because we are going on another excursion tomorrow!

P.s. The Rockies are freaking soooo close to the World Series. I can’t even freaking believe it. I can’t explain how happy I am! I am a proud fan!

——-

I had to get up kind of early Saturday morning in order to meet everyone at Trocadero by 9:30am.  I’m glad I got up when I did because I actually almost missed the bus!  Everyone was already boarded by the time I got off the metro and if Lindsay hadn’t gotten off and called my name I probably would have wandered aimlessly around for half an hour.  I was by myself because Simone ended up staying out until 6am the following night with her new boy J.  So anyways, I got on the bus and we headed off to Fontainebleau.

It was a fairly long bus ride, so I napped and read while we drove.  I am reading a book called The Temple of Gold, a book my host mom put in my room.  It’s interesting – kind of a coming of age story.  At the chateaux, we got out into the cold morning and met up with our guide from Versailles.  She gave us a very detailed tour of the beautiful castle.  This is the castle was the official residence of the Napoleans – not as over the top and as opulent as Versailles, but still gorgeous.  And compared to Versailles, which was ransacked during the Revolution, Fontainebleau still has much of its original furniture and decorations, some dating back to the 1600s.  After the inside tour, I went with Paul and roamed the wonderful gardens.  It was such a crisp fall day, the colorful leaves were falling and you could just start to see your breath freezing in the air.  We ran into some beautiful peacocks as we roamed and took some photos by the lake.

We then walked into town because we had some time left and got some lunch – ham and cheese sandwiches of course!  Back on the bus, we drove for about another hour to Vaux-Le Vicomte, the castle and home of Nicholas Foquet, the minister of Finance under Louis 14th during the 1600s.  Through his “mismanagement” of the French treasury, he was able to amass a huge fortune, but was then stupid enough to reveal the extent of his wealth to King Louis through his gigantic castle.  Louis, who would not be outdone in extravagance by anyone, was very offended and arrested and exiled Fouquet.  Louis then took all the architects and artists from Vicomte and had them make Versailles.  Touché!  Regardless of the history, the castle was very beautiful and of course the gardens were even more breathtaking.  We were going to rent a golf cart and go ride around the fountains, but we ran out of time.  So I bought a postcard and hopped back on the bus (p.s. – fyi, this was the castle where Eva Longoria and Tony Parker were married).

We got back into Paris and I sped home on the metro, picked up my laptop, and ran to the internet café.  And of course, lo and behold, their internet was not working even after I bough 7 euro worth of food and drink.  I picked up a low signal from Hotel Saint Dominique, so being as frustrated as I was, I paid 8 more euro to use 60 minutes of internet.  I didn’t get that much done though so I guess I will have to use Zoe’s again today.  This whole no internet thing has been getting really frustrating recently, especially with school starting and with wanting to plan trips to other European countries.  I had no idea that it would be such a big issue!  I guess I take the internet for granted sometimes.  Hopefully once I get into a routine with class I will be able to find more convenient and more reliable modes of getting online.

Anyways, I walked home flustered and upset.  I took a quick power nap and then got dressed to go out.  That night was the France versus England rugby game and they were showing it on a huge screen under the Eiffel Tower.  I met up with Jill, Kiki, Courtney, Jonathan, Paul, and Brad there – I think 90% of Paris was there… it was crazy!  We watched the game and hung out (France lost unfortunately) and then went out to a bar afterwards.  There were so many people everywhere!  That’s the thing that is so great about this city… I went home at 1:30am and the metro was still open, still crowded.  It’s just all so exciting all the time!
